    I think your second scenario is closer to their reason. I don't think the killer was on that kind of radar but still is someone known by many. I'd have to assume that no better image was found on that recording or this would have been solved before the funerals.

    I'd like to know, what, if anything, was said by the victims in that recording.

    The recording could have anything from just more garbled voices to very gory details of the murders and what happened beforehand. Honestly some things need to be kept known only to those who are doing the investigation. I wouldn’t want such details released if it happened to one of my family members. The whole case is very strange. The recording, the lack of evidence, the different artist sketches and the people who have left the investigation. There is a lot going on that we don’t know about and I think they might even know who did it but just can’t prove it. This is all my own opinion and I have absolutely no connection or any information about it other than the news accounts. I do know it’s a terrible thing that happened to those girls and community and I hope that someday it will be resolved and that the families get the truth and some peace.

    The question of what's on the recording is probably the single most asked question in all interviews, press conferences etc. since the whole thing began.

    What has been said by those who have heard the whole thing is that there's not much. The words "nothing earth-shattering" were used by the sheriff in a recent interview. Apparently the families were given the option to hear the whole thing and said there's nothing very interesting on it. The only noteworthy thing I've heard is that there's a rumour that one of them mentions the guy, saying something like "is that guy still behind me?" or something along those lines. According to youtuber Gray Hughes, someone in one of the families (who heard the recording) confirmed this to him.

    There's obviously no more video footage that could identify the killer, or we would have seen it, and there's also clearly nothing in the audio that identifies the guy or suggests that he was known to them, or we would have heard about it by now.

    This raises a good point. There is a good probability that someone who would do something like this is guided by a millennia-old intelligence that sets the standard for evil. The net result will be evil that operates well outside the boundaries we can grasp and will also make the killer extremely difficult to identify.

    The real question is, do they have the ability to rule him in or out? This guy has been to prison and has a long criminal history, so his fingerprints and DNA must have already been in the system. So even if he is the guy, how are they going to tie him to it now?
