Not at all. Something needs to be done about the mental health of this nation. If great emphasize was placed on it, it would still take a generation or two to make a difference but it needs to start.

Parenting is hard. It takes time and effort. That is where this group fails.
CKW and I worked our asses off to be proper parents but the effect of the influences of their lazy do nothing peers had on them nullified so much and caused us terrible pain.
To my knowledge 96% of that group floundered in misery once in the real world. Some still live with Mom.

Daughter is a good Mom and sees our teachings in a new light as does our son but man it took so long for them to see through the maze.

Parenting IS hard. It is frustrating and there are many times when you aren't sure you are doing the right thing. The little ones are precious.

If you are too hard on a kid, they rebel and resent you.

If you are too soft on a kid, they turn out to be gentle snowflakes.

The internet and social media have exponentially increased the expectation to be happy, perfect and awesome in society. And people get depressed and struggle with their emotions when they don't meet those expectations. Add in drugs and alcohol along with failed relationships and the recipe for a disaster is created.

I couldn't agree more. I'm glad there are still men like us,amongst many others, who hold steadfast. Grit your teeth and embrace the suck, as it were. Too many tuck tail and run at the first notion of difficulty. It brings me the most pain and the most joy I've ever experienced. I'm always tired, but always happy (at my core).

Outside influence is a majority of the youth's examples. I just hope I give them a decent start. I still blame MTV.

Well stated. It's ok to fail. The idea is to adapt and overcome. No one always wins the trophy.

Without being too specific, there is a family member (by marriage) who is 13 years old and confused about their gender. I find that completely f'ing stupid.

My opinion? Remove all social media platforms. They have went from being about staying in touch with people to warping young impressionable minds.

I don't read much, but a book I've read a few times, called " The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F" is probably one of the best things I've read to help me deal with stuff as an adult. The main idea isn't necessarily don't care about anything, it's care about what really matters, embrace the suck in life and be happy with yourself.

I find myself asking myself constantly "should I really care about this?".

For me a job is important in bringing up kids. The sense of responsibility and reward that goes with it helps kids see the world for what it is. I had both of my sons do temp work in factories during the summers around Indiana as soon as they were legal to do so. I think it helped them in employment down the road as most employers like people who don't shirk from work that can be hard or dirty. It also put money in their pockets and taught them how much the government takes out, something to think about when you vote.

Going from Ag to factories made a big difference for me. Nothing in industry I found was tougher than putting up hay or cleaning up after farm animals.

Indeed. I don't make their beds, put their dirties (laundry) in the wash, or clean up their dinner plates. They are responsible for their own makings. They are young, but I want them to be self-reliant. Even the 3y/o has, albeit very light, chores.

On an opposite note, I make them do most things together as a sisterly unit. Make beds; all done but 1? Help her. All done or none done.

Agreed 100%. Had both kids get jobs as soon as legal and both were working side gigs before that. And both kids' first jobs were somewhat unconventional ones that I kind of said, hey you should see if they need some help and each kid actually pitched the employer a job that the employer had not filled part time with a teen before, etc.

I thought it was better than them getting dumped into fast food retail (though that has its own lessons to learn) and taught them something about making opportunities for themselves. I've consistently told them both that

Luck = the intersection of opportunity and preparedness

And they both so far continue to amaze me with the opportunities and things they seek out & prepare themselves to do. Hopefully it continues.

I find myself asking myself constantly "should I really care about this?".

I've heard a few references to that book. I may have to check it out. Without reading it, seems like I've embraced some of the principles. There are only so many things I can actually care about in a big way. I take care of a lot of detail stuff, but there are few "big rocks" that I really care about.
