I don't know that lightweight and 1-8x go together. Lightweight and 1-4, sure.

    What scope do you have?

Yeah. I have never played with a 1-8x before. I seemed like a decent idea at the time. I think a 2-6, 2.5-7, or 2-7 would probably better suit me. I have two of America's rifle that need to be scoped. I wanted something with lowish low end magnification and thought I'd just try out the 1-8. I went with a 3 Series Crimson Trace: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1020618935?pid=149367 I also went with the wider tube for lower light conditions... Not sure that was the best option. Weight is 22.4 oz. I don't know if it just feels heavy because it's in a smaller package. But it feels pretty heavy in the hand.

I'm most a whitetail hunter (in WV, so rifle is good to go), but would like to hunt some other things, too. Given that I was working yesterday evening until 8:30 or so... It's unlikely that I'll get to do much extra hunting while in grad school.

I'm also considering just a prism scope. Or some actually lightweight option like a holographic red dot with magnifier (I think holographic is more or less needed since I have an astigmatism). I have an aversion to Chinese made optics - not to their quality, but it's a product that I can avoid sending them money directly for it. I'll spare you all my rant about the Chinese government.

No purchases were made but the Bergara B-14 was the standout.
Very cool. I saw a review of rifles for under $800, and the Bergara was one of the favorites. I don't recall the exact model.

For instance it's nearly double the weight of this Leupold 2.5-8x:

Edit: Looks like mcapo more or less beat me to it.

There are some other 1-8 scopes out there, like the Strike Eagle and Primary Arms offerings, that weigh about 5 ounces less than yours, but they're also 30mm tubes instead of 34mm. A heavier scope/mount package can make a relatively light AR feel quite a bit unbalanced. That's why I sold my Razor 1-6.

Hmm. I probably won't buy another one like this. I thought since it's a straight tube, I thought "It'll be alright." It seems like it's about 4 ounces heavier than the Zeiss conquests. I couldn't find the box for my Zeiss scopes just a few minutes ago when I was looking to see how they compare. I don't anticipate to fully tac-out the rifle, it'll likely just be scoped.

    Not an unreasonable plan.

My general thoughts are as follows (based on very little time using a magnifier). Using the combination of red dot and magnifier without being able to easily mount and remove the magnifier does not seem appealing. The Strikefire II has a 4 MOA dot which will be 12 MOA with a 3x behind it. That will cover 2' at 200 yards. Not exactly a precision aiming setup. If you are going to flip it off to the side frequently it is just in the way.

Reality may be different than I imagine. Also a 1 MOA dot might be more appropriate with a magnifier.

In general, I feel better served with a 1-4x LPVO with a lighted center red dot in the reticle. It can be used like a red dot at 1x and cranked up for long shots without magnifying the dot.

Just my :twocents: and worth what you paid for it.
WT......I'm aiming (haha) this post at you......but I wanted to say that I agree with Tarzan's assessment (above ).

Kaloo kalay no work today! We're cabbages and kings!

GM all. Coffee or die. May have consumed slightly more Crown than necessary, but not too much. Glad the turkeys slept in. How fare thee?

My only fear is that the recoil might be harsher with that model than some of the others.
