I hope you made more than just that bag...……..:):

The holster argument (never stays a discussion especially later in the evening :40oz: ) has been ongoing since they started making retention systems.

Possibly agree that a newbie should refrain from getting a Serpa.

I actually have my Safari out on the desk. Looking at what I can do to make it more user friendly for me.

IIRC didn't you say the biggest issue seems to be the ride height preventing you from getting the muzzle up to clear the holster?

Seems like you could cut out a U notch an inch or two deep into the front facing portion, giving you a little more space to clear the barrel.

I ran my Safariland during the ACT defensive pistol class a few weekends ago. It was my first time running it in a class and I was impressed with how easy and intuitive to engage and get the gun out. I had practiced with it a bit, but not extensively so I was happy that I didn't have any mishaps or retention issues where I missed the release.

Did the conversation prompt you to make another evaluation of your holster selection?

In a way yes. I am a tinkerer. If I can modify something to make it work better for me I will look into it.
If you look at the pic of the serpa with my Clark barreled comped 1911 you will see it is clearance in front to give the operator some space to get the muzzle into play easier. That is one of the pluses I find in the Serpa. Add to this it is just a natural motion to unlock the gun and draw as long as you "Keep you damned finger off the trigger". My finger stays straight forward on the slide all the way up to the ready. Lots of folks screw that up but again it is not the holster it is the operator.

The safari is closed in up to the rear ights. Add that to riding a full inch higher and the motion required to clear it is a bit more than my damaged shoulder likes to deal with. The release on the Serpa also requires an un-natural position for me to easily do. It is doable but not second nature as to the ease of the Serpa.

The argument as to the mechanism might be valid. But I have had zero issues. The discussion in no way makes me doubt my carry choice it just re-opened a possibility. That and some time at the gun bench is never worthless time spent.

I will call you in a bit. But to address the ride height issue, if you use this holster for OC, take your Safari ALS and put it on a mid drop hanger. It will lower the grip, but probably just enough to clear that ENORMOUS thing on the end of your pistola. I’ll discombobulate my “Battle Belt” so you can test the mid ride drop adapter.? Lemme know.

For duty carry, I find I have to use a low ride. They do tend to sit a little high.

As Vigilant and I discussed on the phone I tore my right rotator 26 years ago. The surgery of the day was just terrible. Looking at 8+ months of downtime and that was just not going to work for me. Kids in private school, boats and bikes and just way to much going on to let them basically disconnect my arm and put it back on. My BIL had the same deal around that time and he never fully got all of his use back. And he was down for 10 months.

So I am paying for that now with a right shoulder that has its moments. And using the ALS in standard mount position just is not gonna work for the mouse. I am still leery of the release button position but we will see.

Since I'm in theory locked down to the house, my changes have been focused around home defense. I recently ordered parts and accessories to bring my second MPX all the way up to snuff, so I have his & hers faux submachine guns as I originally intended for myself and my fiance.

In terms of carry, I was lucky to score some AIWB/IWB options before this all got really interesting, and I've made a point to make sure I'm armed when I leave the house. I haven't seen anything local to lead me to believe I really do have a greater need now than I did a month ago (which is realistically, low) but it doesn't hurt, and with not going onto a federal installation daily I'm able to carry as I'd like (basically everywhere).

No changes for the most part. My soon to be 16 year old son is now trusted with knowing the combo to the shotgun lock. Other then that business as usual.

The boy turned 16 today. He thinks the Thunder Ranch edition Mossberg 590 I bought him as a present is cool. Gun, Sling, Light, Ammo, KISS. Now we will have to sneak to the range for some Social Distancing.

I used to carry glock but with everything happening I'm carrying a beretta 92 because real guns aren't made of plastic

VERT, that's a great birthday present.

CM, my ALS holster has been great. I was unsure about the release at first but with practice it has became very natural to me. I had to get the low ride belt attachment because the high ride was not comfortable at all. I only use that holster for work and have a different OWB kydex holster for edc. Need to get another ALS with a paddle attachment for edc so the release is the same but I'm comfortable with both.

The only real change I've made is my work gear gets an extra pen and a few extra pairs of gloves.

I would also say the ALS is huge by comparison to my Serpa. I can effectively carry with a sweatshirt and the rig is not very obvious but that ALS hangs out a butt load by comparison.
Not saying I wont give it a try as Vigilant if letting me use his low mount to see if these issues can be over come but man if I shoot myself drawing from the ALS (and yes people shoot themselves all the damned time with any number of different holsters as your finger is always there regardless so stuff that one in the video. :bs:) I will be having speaks with a few folks.....:):

    Uh.....I am still here.
I admit I should have seen this coming. Especially now with all the insanity we are all dealing with.
And I still stand by my choices just as you all will stand by yours.
    Respect. Simple as that.

Yeah! Just be happy you get choices unlike us southpaws! :):
