Not if you look at it from PETA's perspective. There is no waste of time whatsoever if they can position themselves as the custodians of copyright to any such photos or other artistic works in the future. The potential could be truly unbelievable, and they are unbelievably greedy for both money and control.
They win every time someone writes a story about them. The publicity is their victory. Keeping their name out there at the extremist edge of animal rights is their goal.

Yes, in a world where people have some semblance of sense.

No. not from PETA's perspective as it's plan is to have animals treated like humans...which they are not.

Every lawyer who signed a pleading for PETA in this case should have been sanctioned. A settlement is a win for them.

Now the connected world has decided it's okay to impose conformity sanctions it's ever more important to virtue-signal the mob so we're left alone.

    WARNING SHOT ALERT!!!

If her daddy is a lawyer, he needs to spend more time on whatever Tennessee's version of INGO is before explaining that she feared for her safety and didn't mean to shoot him.

HoughMade calls BS on at least half of this story.

That statement was so good for the prosecution. They might have gone for a lesser charge if he hadn't opened his mouth.
