Has anyone tried a 3 day backpacking trip with just their get home bag? I'm thinking a out trying it this fall. It will be interesting to see how much stuff I add to it after the test. I'm sure I will discover I'm not as tough as I think I am.

Sounds like something that might be fun for the younger set. Sleeping on the ground in the open just doesn't appeal to me these days.:)

    Me too.

Mine would be a totally different test. If I had to hump it home from the office, its from roughly 30th and Shadeland to Camby. Thats either one hell of an arc to stay away from people, or right through some sketchy parts of town.

That's not a hike I would like to make even on a good day.

I really wanted to walk a few routes from the OLD office at 71st and 465 (west side) to Brownsburg. Then they moved the office to Keystone at the Crossing. Finally, I said "screw it" and started working out of my home office. Current commute is pretty light. :D

I'd still like to hoof it home sometime. Just haven't really thought about it in a while. I KNOW my bag is crap.

Go to the Hoosier National Forest and have someone pick you back up at a predetermined location and time. That will test your navigation skills as well. You can have fires there, and you can camp anywhere. Just make sure you look I to the rules first. I think they want you to notify them first.

I would wish you very good luck on that particular trip unless your get home bag included a get home Humvee.

meh.....I can run 50 miles pretty easily. No bag needed. I can pretty well make it home from wherever I am.

A sawyer water filter, a couple snickers bars, and a winter coat is all I need.

If I'm going through wilderness, I add a tarp, spool of 550 cord, candle, magnesium and striker, a knife, and a couple fishing hooks.

13 miles straight up Keystone from 25th St. Depending on situation, I would guess about 4- 24 hours. Once I got past the Fall Creek bridge it would be cake until the next choke point over White River. Natural barriers in good times are an inconvinence but in bad could be deadly. Got alternative way to get around at both places ;)

I do have a 6x8 tarp and a light weight 40 degree sleeping bag in my kit. No pad though.
Think "double duty" In my truck I have a fold up windshield shade that is reflective on both sides. It will double nicely as a ground pad, at least for the GHB, and it's on less thing I have to buy. Slipped in to an old bag for a folding chair and it ins't conspicuous while carrying.

Three days backpack trip in the Hoosier National Forest versus a three day backpack trip from 42nd and Post Rd to 10th and Raceway. Who wins?

The Hoosier National Forest trip is a great way to test a pack as well as your endurance. I've spent two days in there, but not blind. Doing it blindly would be a great way to make you feel more confident in a SHTF scenario.

I have a Bug Out Bag, sleeping bag, small tent, e tool, and my TRUNK GUN in my POV, In a big emergency, you might not make it home, or have to live for a while out of your car.

I do not plan a forced road march home, but I do plan to get there. The Glock-22, MRE's, water and shelter, will just have to do.
