Today at the Rockville gun show I saw a pretty sweet Smith and Wesson MP spring assisted knife. I've owned a couple of the SWAT knives from 15 years ago and they were pretty decent little pocket knives. I was ready to buy this MP edition (Smith & Wesson MP Series One Spring Assist Knife) when I noticed "Made in Tiawan" on the box.

    'Booooooo' I thought to myself.

So are they decent? worth having? or should I move on? :dunno:

I have a pair of S&W, one a black ops and one a extreme ops. Both I picked up on clearance and both were in the $17 range.

These knives are worth about 15-20 bucks normally. They are usually prices about twice as much. I'd say buy it if it was <20. At 40 bucks, pass.

I had a few of those knives. I think they are "ok" knives. They are made by Taylor Brands in Taiwan and China. Some are much better than the rest. The ones I had before didn't hold an edge very well against cardboard boxes, but the one I have now (CK6A) holds an edge nicely. AutoZone carries some of them for $11.99.

expect it to fail with hard use. but for a $12-15 dollar knifes, they are that. i carried one for a few years before i got into the more expensive stuff. it cut well, but didn't stand up to "hard" work to well.... no prying, no chopping, no cutting with TOO much force behind the blade (unless yo ulike losing control of a broken knife..)...

To bulky for me. I like my folders slim and concealable.
I have one you might like then. See link.

I don't think it is exactly like mine but close enough to get the point across. They are about as thick as 4 quarters or so and extremely heavy duty. I know that it could be used as a hammer or even as a handle tied to a rope.

yes wal-mart carries the native in s30v. I have never liked the s&w knives, always likened them to dollar store striders imo. some of them might look cool but thats pretty much all they will do. with the plethora of superior blade steels out now it would be a wise choice to look elsewhere if you plan on using your knife.

Another bargain are the Ka-Bar Dozier Folders. They're $20-25, 3" blade made of AUS8A with a decent heat treatment, FRN handle, very light and slim.

I have the extreme ops I picked up at the Ft. Wayne gun show for $15, best $15 I spent in a long time. The blade seems pretty durable (Titanium 440 steel). Gutted a few rabbits with it in the woods, cut some small branches for a ground blind. It's a good beater knife.

Iv'e been carrying a S&W Gold Shield for going on 2 years now, it was very inexpensive if I recall (under $20.00) and see's pretty regular use day to day, it's help up well and earns its keep.

All I am saying is that it may not fail today or tomarrow but it will fail before a higher quality knife. Same reason I only buy full tang instead of "bolt" knives

I buy a cheap knife because I spend my money on a good gun. :D

well when your lost/camping/surviving in the woods and just used your last bullet on shooting dinner and have to make a shelter but your first thrust/chop with your cheap knife breaks the blade or cuts your hand and you have no finger and or shelter, I bet you'll be glad you spent that extra money on a good gun;)
