There is a local to me (kentucky ave/high school rd) Shell station that flies an insanely large flag. TOO large IMHO. its too big to fly at half staff without touching the ground. :(

In fact, I drove by the other day and witnessed what appeared to be a customer *****ing out the staff. she was standing outside poiting up at the flag, which had a rather large area at the bottom that was blackend and tattered, with bits of the flag hanging fron the building. Apparently the wind blew just the right direction, and just the right speed that it dragged across the pump canopy and various mechanical apparatus (hvac coils) that it was filty and tattered in the lower outside corner. disgraceful.

Why businesses think they are doing good by flying an over sized flag is beyond me... If you cant fly it at half staff or it touches nearby structures at full staff, its too big, sorry.

It is only to draw your attention to the business.

what happened to the good old days? We all remember those days. in those days if you did something stupid, the penalty was an ass whoopin.
Im not talking about the kind you got when you were a kid. Im talking about someone walking up, and bust you in the mouth.
You know what happens after that? you dont do that again. isnt learning fun.

Did you grow up around me????/

In those days if you cut someone off, did any of the stupid crap people take for granted today you got knocked on your A$$ and boy howdy you never even considered calling the LEO in on it.

These days, INGOers say they'll shoot anyone who dares to punch them in self defense. So which is it? Are we to go back to the glory days of fist fighting or are we too old and tired to fight?

I don't understand the outrage. It's just a piece of cloth. Words are just words and cardboard silhouettes of real people are just targets.

Darn it Horn I was on a role remembering my youth. Yes, I am getting long in the tooth and resist fighting anymore but grew up in a rough and tumble area. Fighting was the norm. Parents came out to watch a good straight up boxing match. There was some honor in this.

I do agree with you, especially about the targets. I see what you did there.

Just because some things may be insignificant to me, it doesn't give me the right to discount the significance others place on those things.

Many were quick to back Paula Dean because because a word is just a word.

Many didn't have an issue with shooting a Justin Bieber cardboard because it was just a target. What if I had silhouettes made of INGOers, their children or grandchildren to shoot at? It's just a target right? Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber is somebody's son and grandson.

Now we get to the sacred flag and we want to condone assault, theft, etc.

Just because I may find something insignificant to me, it doesn't give me the right to disrespect what others hold near and dear.

I take that as an insult to every American soldier who has died defending
that "piece of cloth", allowing you the freedom to say that.

    :patriot:

I'm insulted that you don't recognize that those brave souls didn't die protecting that "piece of cloth," but rather the ideals it stood for.

I am just insulted in general any more.

Horny is right. Not my place to condemn something that someone else thinks is important. Soldiers died to protect so much more than the cloth.

How about a little rewording on my part, they died protecting that piece of cloth for the the idea's it stands for, that flag to our forefathers was a beacon of liberty on the battlefield and it's presence was a inspiring site because what it stood for.

I remember my grandfather telling me before he died in 1975, that when he was in Europe during WWII, men died in battle just to keep it from falling to the ground or into enemy hands, so yes, brave men have died protecting that piece of cloth.

There was so much honor in those men. Not to take away from those who now serve or have served but it was a different time. "So much bleach has been put into society that much has been tainted and washed away". Those were the words of my recently deceased army ranger uncle. He and his brother looked at the flag through those eyes.
    The world is changing.

The only way to disrespect the people who have given all for liberty and the symbols of liberty that we hold dear, would be to take away that liberty. I choose not to see disrespect of the flag as disrespectful to those who served under it. I choose to believe that they would be proud that we still enjoy at least some of our freedom of expression and that they did not die in vain.

Obviously my point in this thread is lost on some people here. How can one say racial slurs are just words and aren't offensive and yet find any disrespect to the flag as offensive? Slurs don't affect me personally but I don't have the authority to tell Paula Dean's employees that they have no right to be offended at Paula's use of the word. Because if I had that authority, others have the authority to tell you the flag is just a piece of cloth.

My faith isn't emodied in a bunch of pages bound together in a book or other religious symbols.

As well, my pride for my country isn't emodied in a piece of cloth. If another chooses to improperly handle a flag, my pride isn't affected. Maybe others pride is so I choose not to disrespect the flag.

Slurs don't offend me but they offend others so I don't use them.

We need to ditch the cafeteria plan of what we choose to be or not be offensive.

I am sure that these people didn't disrespect the flag or the men who served it intentionally! They probably don't have the same rules for flying their flag in Mexico? I would say there were trying to show respect for the USA and Mexico and had no idea what was wrong with it. They should be educated so in the future they can do it right. Cutting the flags down and throwing their nations flag on the ground was just as disrespectful. They were probably sitting there wondering wtf was going on? Who is this crazy bearded m-fer with a knife, and what did we do wrong? They probably think it happened because the guy didn't want Mexicans in the USA. I love mexican food and beer! If flying the US flag under the Mexican flag is what it takes to get that, I think its a fair compromise!!

You , having been a soldier , know exactly what those colors , stars and stripes stand for and yet you can still say those words ?

No sense of national pride or patriotism huh ?

Good thing guys like you weren't in Washington's ranks , we'd still be a British colony .
