Ole dad had several that apply to general life and can be applied to survival, I'd say. These spring to mind:

Never trust a person that smiles all the time.

    Never trust a horse trader.

    Can you explain that one?

The full version is 'Beware of the man with only one gun. He probably knows how to use it.'

Conversely, many of us own several and probably have a less than expert level of proficiency with at least a few of them.

What happens when you shoot someone? NOTHING, keep shooting.

What happens when you get shot? NOTHING, keep shooting.

Those are words of advice given in the tactical treatment of gunshot wounds class regarding what to expect as results from getting shot. Shooting someone doesn't put them out of the fight, nor should it take you out of the fight.

The one my grandfather always referred to when teaching me anything
"Their drills are bloodless battles, and their battles bloody drills."

That was my guess but wanted to make sure. Thanks :)

It makes perfect sense to me. You cannot be so rigid in one direction that you cannot adapt to conditions, but you cannot be directionless either. Is your interpretation similar?

I would interpret it the same way...you put it so much more eloquently. His other saying when he was talking to us was "cop a squat".

    :)
