As I stated before in a different thread, I am looking to get an XDM in .40 cal. I have the opportunity to acquire an XD tactical in .40 cal. What would I be giving up by getting the XD instead of the XDM and would the XDM be worth the extra $150. Opionions please...

Well I have never had an XD and I am new to my XDm but the one thing I liked about the "m" is it comes with a match grade barrel.

I am sure there are those with much more XD/XDm experience, but the bottom line to me is, I really don't think you can go wrong with either!

I had the same dilemma. Here are the differences, the XDM is taller and is made to hold more rounds. Also, the XDM has a match grade barrel. The XDM only comes in one size (4.5"). The XDM also has the option of 3 different interchangeable grips. Those are the main differences and from what I hear it IS worth the price difference. I will be purchasing the XDM .40 this weekend.

You would be giving up 4 rounds of mag capacity, match grade barrel, interchangeable backstraps, texturing of grip, no trigger pull on disassembly just to name a few. Both are great IMO but one is better. $150 better? I think so.:)

Edit: I do own both XD.45 and XDm9

Not trying stir things up here because I own an XD40 and love it... Rather than an XDm, you should consider a SW M and P. I bought one and fell in love with it. I can out shoot my glocks and XD with it. It is an amazingly accurate pistol. There are a lot of rumors that Springfield came out with the XDm to compete with the M and P because the M and Ps are so accurate and have the reputation of out shooting XDs and Glocks. Not a thread hijack. Just want to let you know what I decided to do. Plus, budget was an issue and buds had the M and P for $439 with a $50 rebate.

I have had both XD Tactical and XDM they are both great shooting handguns. I found it hard to tell the difference in the way they shot.

I haven't shot my XDm 9 yet, but I did shoot a friends. IMO it seems identical to my XD 9 service.

Is the extra 150 worth the "extras"? Depends... My service XD is more accurate than I am right now, so the match barrel is moot. The grip texture on my XD was perfect until I tried the XDM. I do prefer the XDM, but the XD texture is a very, very close second. Back strap change out? I liked the XD exactly as it was. The XDM I might change it out, haven't messed with it yet.

So that basically leaves us with capacity. Is the extra 3 rounds "worth it"? At 50 bucks a round, maybe... maybe not.

Keep in mind up until election XD9 and 40 mags were 19 bucks each. XDM mags (if you can find them) at 28-30 dollars and it's doubtful prices will fall since the XDM is the new rage and obama is coming to power. XD9 and 40 prices are still in the low 20's and plentiful.

I love the XD series (including the xdm). I am still going to carry my XD9 service for many reasons... I have night sights on it, bitone finish vs melonite, I am confident in it. I don't see a point in changing out my carry gun for 3 more rounds.

I honestly just bought my XDM because I talked the dealer down to 555 and for the free mags. I really wanted a silver and OD bitone vs the black/OD that I have. I may sell this one and buy another exactly how I want it later and I've scored 2 free mags.

Can anyone explain to me the "match grade barrel" thing? I understand the terminology, but was curious if this *really* makes a difference in a 4" combat handgun. Or is this just a buzzword to sell another gun to current XD owners?

The thing I loved most about the XDM was the grip the way it was in my hand the one's I held at Bradis had the small and medium back strap inserted. I at that time also handled a XD. In my hand the XDM was ****. I am considering the XD tactical as I may be able to trade for a used one. That would save me allot of out of pocket cash not to mention sales tax. I found the XDM Bi-tone for $650 and Black for $590 while the XD tactical is around $500. Oh the agony of it lol. I guess I will go back to the gunshop and handle them both one more time before I decide. Who knows maybe Ill come across some one at the 1500 that hates their XDM and just has to get rid of it lol..ATM made some really valid points that I agree with. I guess I am just wanting to not have to wait and save up for it. I do think those extras are worth the extra dollars. I wonder how the deadline on the free mags from Springfield works. Like if I just put one in layaway could I still get them later on??

You need the paid bill of sale prior to the Jan 15 deadline so layaway won't get the promotional mags. If you compare the used XD (plus 2 more mags and carrier) with the enhanced features of the XDM plus 2 extra mags and carrier (included with promotion), I think the difference is less than $150. Not giving financial advice here but I would put it on a credit card if I needed to make the promotional period and plan to pay it off within a month. That's at least a $75 perk.

Did I mention better trigger with shorter reset?:)

I don't believe in credit cards never use them. I cut up my last one when I was 25 lol...However I once again agree. I think I will just do what I got to do and get the XDM. I coulda had one in 9mm but I want the .40 so ill just hold out till I can get what I really want...

When I had my XD Tactical in .40 I can honestly say I saw no difference in accuracy between it and the standard Service model in the same caliber. Many others at xdtalk.com have confirmed similar findings. However if you are looking to make a "race gun" then I'd definitely start with the tactical and get a custom fitted barrel, the XDM would probably be close to that out of the box though and cheaper.

I have both as well in 9mm though. After having run about 400 rounds through the XDM I don't believe the hype about a better trigger. In fact my M was noticably worse than the XDsc after a very detailed disassemble and cleaning it is probably equal to the XD now. Accuracy is obviously better with the M over my SC and I will say the M shoots very well. Interchangable backstraps I have to say I cannot complain about the grip on the SC. I guess if you have a rather large or small hand it would be a sell maker.
I would think if I was buying again knowing what I know now I would have bought the used XD45 compact they had at the shop and saved a couple hundred.
But don't get me wrong the XDM is a great weapon and a good buy with the XDgear you get. Worth the extra $$ is a decision you have to make. Either one will be a great pistol!
