Each year over Christmas, wreaths are placed on the graves of veterans at national cemeteries. These wreaths are not paid for by the U.S. government but rather by private citizens who care enough to donate not only their time but also their money to purchase these wreaths.
Indiana has one active national cemetery, in Marion. Last year, we had 1,600 wreaths. This year, our goal is 2,500. There are currently 10,000 graves at Marion. The purchase of the wreath is $15; however, we are able to purchase three wreaths for $30. Every penny donated goes to the purchase of wreaths.
On Aug. 16 at noon, people will meet at Marion National Cemetery to donate money for the wreaths and to view the beauty of that resting place for our veterans. The event is open to everyone. Various American Legion motorcylists are coming from Auburn, Butler, Leo, Kendallville, Orland and other towns.
On Dec. 13 at noon, the wreaths will be placed on the graves in a tribute to our veterans. Everyone in attendance will be encouraged to help, and people who have loved ones buried at the cemetery may place a wreath on their grave.
Donations for the wreaths may be dropped off or mailed to the law office of Hugh N. Taylor, 121 W. Seventh St., Auburn, IN 46706, or Gayle Armes at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN 46928, or submitted at the Wreaths Across America website at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. If you contribute through the website, please specify Marion, Indiana, as the cemetery of choice. Your participation and donations are greatly appreciated. This image is from last year.
