It will be interesting/ possibly horrible to see what happens on this. I don't know if the sentiment to strike is widespread, it may be overstated since this is a blurb written by some neckbeard and published on some socialist rag. I do prefer Aldi more and more especially since they started making some of their stores bigger.

... What really gets me is when they have self checkouts that won’t accept cash.
Forget the cash payment hassle, Kroger lost me when their payment system started forcing me to (or tried to) use my PIN on my Mastercard endorsed debit card. For a while there was at least a workaround (insert card backwards 3 times so system thinks chip is malfunctioning, then use mag stripe instead), but then they went and eliminated that goofy option. So they can drop off the face of the earth for all I care

AND, Kroger started charging for 'cash back'! I just spent $200.00 on groceries and you want to charge me for cash back? Unreal.

That started during Covid. To be fair though, it's only like a 50 cent charge. Hell, some ATM's charge 3 bucks or more. Rosie, the cashier I mentioned earlier caught some young punk trying to buy a single packet of Koolaid and wanting to get $100 cash back. As you can imagine, their machines would quickly run out of cash if a lot of people started doing that. And that is how you get the lanes that say, "Card Only. No Cash Back" - because people have run them dry. She sent him on his way. :):

I actually prefer using Kroger for this. It's due to the added security of the chip+PIN system, which most other vendors don't fully implement. It's way more secure to do transactions this way than to just read the chip or use the swipe to read the stripe on the card.

I will not use self check out lanes....... never have enough cashiers. I am not going to stand in line 10 or 12 deep when only one of 10 registers is staffed. The self check area is 12 - 20 deep also. Seems like some manager would notice.
You are preaching to the choir on this. The only competitor to Kroger in Crawfordsville is WalMart and they have hassles in parking and long checkout lines. The independent local market shut down during the pandemic.

I'm OK with everything at Kroger other then the consistent understaffing of their checkouts. It seem to be a corporate policy rather then isolated problems.

We use Kroger for most of our packaged goods. With the new store in Brownsburg, it is a much improved experience. Still have a couple of grumps at the checkout (and a few good ones). Still understaffed with baggers. Stocking seems to be a BIT better, but I don't think they have moved back to overnight stocking (still use daytime staff, and they are either in the way or run out of stuff before they refill from stock).

If their wages go up, you had better bet my expectations will. My wife is already annoyed with them.

Their "points" do buy us an awful lot of gas. Can't complain there.

We moved dairy and coffee to delivery a while back. Beef and pork straight from the farm/processor. Costco for anything we can get/store bulk. Amazon/WholeFoods for quite a bit. Really just leaves fresh goods (which are hit and miss at Kroger) and lower-volume packaged goods.

My wife has been using their delivery service more lately (hard for either of us to get to the store right now). Sometimes it is perfectly fine. Other times she could strangle someone. It is mostly the picker/driver, but their app could use some help.

Kroger has been "training" their customers to self checkout for some time. The scamdemic made for an oportunity to escalate this.

Combined with the legit staffing issues that have grown from the govt lockdowns, Kroger has grown numb to customer service. They are leading us into, "just shutup and be happy that we are here for your milk and bread." :xmad:

I wonder how much they care about that down here? They've gotten to where long lines to checkout are just the norm. Like the hearing the "baby crying," they have grown numb to seeing it.

I have a newer Aldi's on my side of Btown. I need to train myself on how to shop their stores. Fresh Thyme is on this side of town also, but it's really hard to match Kroger's pricing.

    .
Here is your Aldi's shopping training:
    1. get cart
    2. push up and down every isle
    3. see it, need it, grab it
    4. go stand in line and pay for it prior to leaving

That's what I was talking about. The quarter cart thing. And the paying for grocery bags, that I have to load myself, right?

When I was at Aldi's the one time, the cashier was off doing some other chore. Had to wait, in a building line, for them to get around to returning.

Is it a given that you always return the cart for the quarter? Do shoppers ever find it more convenient to lose that quarter and leave the cart any random place?

Leave the cart in the lot. I am more than happy to use it and get paid a quarter for returning it. It stops the homeless from stealing it and keeps the store from having to pay someone to collect the carts from the lot. I wish all stores would use the quarter locks on their carts.

Bonus points if you find a cart in the lot to plug your cart into to get your quarter back without having to return it to the store.

I keep meaning to try Aldi's, but the only one near me is not very convenient as it's about 15 minutes down 135. There's one near Emerson and Southport that might be a better drive.

    This is good information. Thanks!

Please keep it coming. Does Aldi runs adds or specials? Link?

    Somewhere else
Same. Their ID policy is ridiculous. (Sir, its the law. I MUST scan your ID. ) No, you dont you cranky old hag. So I started giving them my Utah permit since it doesnt have a barcode. Until I had to argue with a ridiculous cashier. "We dont accept that as ID" Uh, Its .gov issued photo ID. Its acceptable. What if I took the bus because I dont have a DL? The cashiers at the Southern Plaza stores are the worst.

Especially the one that moves like a turtle and cant remember to bring her stuff into work with her. She called us over as she opened her register. Then before she could help us she said "Just a minute" and waddled out the front door. Literally a minute and a half later she comes waddling back in wearing her glasses.
The Utah permit is good for that. I used mine once when renewing my Sam's Club membership. The lady ask for a state ID. I handed her mine and she handed it back and said "sir, I need to see a state issued ID." To which I replied, ma'am Utah IS a state. She had no clue after that.

Does Aldi still carry off-brand (their brand) and usually only a single selection of an item?

Had some friends that liked this, as they don't have to think. Just grab.

My wife wasn't too interested, as she looks for very specific brands/items. Cost isn't always the primary concern.
