In response to the OP title, US Embassy's are guarded by Marines. It would not be the first time the Marines were ordered to do nothing. Especially in that region of the world.

Our country used to show pride and honor abroad... Too bad the Marines probably had their hands tied.

Looks like someone ordered the Marines to stand down. They have plenty of arms and tear gas in the armory there. The Egyptian police also failed in their job of keeping them out of the embassy. Lots of blame to go around. Of note is that the embassy warned their personnel to not be in the embassy. Someone anticipated this, which was a good thing, as the embassy has a lot employees (American and Egyptian). Doesn't look like the Salafists managed to get in any of the building, tho. That's something.

You can get relieved for return throwing of any object that is thrown at you. Throwing bacon would make the powers that run the Embassy literally pee all over themselves.

I'm guessing all of that money we give Egypt in foreign aid is kinda like bribe money so they play nice with Israel, and buy F-16s and M1 Abrams tanks from U.S. defense contractors.

Finally, for those posters who have been criticizing Chinese and Russian policy in Syria, remember they're supporting the old guard, who were tossed out in Egypt and Libya. And we should toss out the government in Syria now, because???
