I know there are a lot of scary stories out there about this but thankfully mine wasn't one of them. I took off work early on a Friday, got it done and drove myself home. I was barely aware that they had even started yet until I saw the puff of smoke. I just took it easy for the weekend and was back to work Monday with no complications or pain meds of any kind.

The only thing interesting about my experience is the fact that the doctor initially refused to do the procedure unless I consulted a counselor first. He was concerned because I was only 25 at the time. I explained to him that I'm paying for this out of my own pocket because my insurance does not cover it. Believe me, I've thought about it. I won't be adding any unnecessary costs. If you don't want the job there are plenty of other doctors.

You'd rather put your wife through terribly invasive and dangerous procedures when done with kids...over a relatively few uncomfortable few hours? If you're ever faced with that decision...hope you're more humble about it. ;-)

26,280 continuous hrs, at a minimum, for me, and all well beyond uncomfortable.
Guess that's reason enough for me to not be humble.

Oh yeah, no pain meds either.

Is it really worth all the pain:dunno:

In my case it was. My wife had multiple blood clots and pulmonary emboli ... she almost died. The doc indicated that another pregnancy may kill her. So she was going to get her tubes tied. But that was another surgery and another risk of death. It was a no brainer ... I had to get fixed or give up sex (another no brainer).

BUT back to the OP. What is a vasectomy like. Just go to youtube and see for yourself. Then you'll never get one.

Bless you! I wanted to avoid a 3rd so bad I was willing to have it all REMOVED. He stepped up to the plate. I'm so lucky.

What a bunch of whiners! Somebody ripped a whole other human out of my nether region without so much as a Tylenol.
    Wimps.

LOL. Fo realz. I've been cut open and turned inside out. And they're bellyaching about about a little prick and cut. Tsk tsk.

Found this on the Best of Craigslist. Guy goes into great detail to describe the Big V. I can testify to the fact that the whole time it feels like someone just kicked you in the junk. My wife was there for mine and the Dr. kept saying "Hey come take a look at this" and cracking jokes at me.

Note: 2-3 NSFW words in the posting.

best of craigslist: What a Vasectomy is Really Like

I checked this out and I'm thinking about heading in for one. From everything I've heard, a vasectomy (even without anything to numb you) is FAR less painful than having kids. The pain also last a few days instead of 18+ years.

There is no way I would put myself through elective surgery. Especially for a vasectomy. Not gonna do it. Nor would I subject my wife to elective surgery either. Just makes no sense to me.

Dr. Grey in Mooresville did mine. Worst part was the shot. He hit one of the Vas with the needle. That stung a bit:):. Awake and having a discussion the whole time.
Tested the equipment the second day just to make sure things still jumped up like they were supposed to.
If you see the good Dr. ask him about the time he sewed up his own personal chainsaw wound. W/O fainting. Now THAT is testicular fortitude!:twocents:

Me and the wife talked to the doc about about me getting one when she was pregnant with our youngest boy. His answer was buy 2 get one free, pay for the birth and hernia repair (tummy tuck) and get your tubes tied free. Best 100 bucks I ever spent seeing as how I have never had a numbing injection that worked.

As I was laying on the table, I told the doc before he started that while he had my testicles in is hands he should think about how his life was in my hands afterwards. I didn't laugh or grin either.... but he was fast , gentle and silent.

Guy in Germany found out he was sterile. Hired the next-door neighbor, who had two children and resembled him, to get his wife pregnant. After six months of trying with no results, he demanded his money back. The neighbor refused, not having guaranteed results. It was then they discovered that the neighbor was also sterile; his wife admitted the children weren't actually his. Best not to open too many cans of worms at once, I guess. Vasectomies have been known to fail legitimately, too.

My grandpa's cousin learned this the hard way when he had a vasectomy and a year or so later had both his wife and girlfriend pregnant. Needless to say, that didn't work out very well for him!

Check for a vas on both sides. If you can't find one get an Xray done BEFORE you go in for the surgery. If not the clown might go exploratory and damage a lot of nerves, and cause an inguinal hernia on top of that.

Lightning storms in the groin, plus any activity was like getting slammed with a steel bar, of course your buds are in a friggin' glowing frying pan when getting "smashed".

Yup, 3 yrs of that crap, then "pop" and the pain dropped 50% immediately, then slowly ebbed. 3 friggin years of that...........every day, all day. Married to a size 1 turbo prop too. Brutal aint even close to describing the pain.

Only saving grace was the constant aspect of the pain. You get used to it, but man does it kill your activity level. No mountain biking or running, feel like crap all the time. Gain a few pounds.

Healed fine, eventually. But a wicked 3 yrs.

    Do the check.

    You've been warned.

My story is somewhat similar. I posted this before.

"Yea I wish I had all the warm fuzzy memories some of you do. Know that speach that they give you saying only one in so many thousand have issues. That would be me. Nothing like several times a day for the past 3 1/2 years that it feels like thumbtacks are inserted in the said area. Or the burn. Oh yeah, the cyst that formed at the point of attack. And the only thing you can do is let them go in and start cutting more away. And that still may not work. I would give you some more detail but better not unless you send me a pm. But the surgery itself is not to bad. That was the easy part. Goodluck!"
