Houston just elected State Senator John Whitmire as Mayor over Congressional Representative Sheila Jackson Lee.
He’ll still burn in eternity for being a Democrat, but he is well to the right of cuckoo Sheila. He’s noted for getting the TDCJ to cancel the last meal tradition for death row inmates and refusing to air condition the prisons on the principle if it’s too hot for you in the pen don’t do the crime.
I’ve been calling Houston the wanna-be Chicago of Texas for sometime now, because in the last couple of elections they put in Soro-sized DA and judges etc, but some interesting things have been happening lately. The current DA Kim Ogg was supported by Left/Soro-affiliated groups, but now they are mad because she’s walked back some of her campaign rhetoric.
She’s also going after fellow Democrat County Judge Lina Hidalgo for corruption, which for Dems is real knife-in-the-back stuff. (Note: in Texas County Judge is kind of the county mayor, can do some judge functions related to estates and wills and such, but usually sticks to executive administration functions like a city mayor would, especially in the big counties.) Hidalgo is target of multiple corruption investigations from several directions and Kim Ogg just threw gasoline on that fire.
Whitmire has been chair of the Senate Justice Criminal Committee since early 90s, even under Republican majorities, which means he helped pass, or at least got out of the way of, Licensed Carry, Campus Carry, and Constitutional Carry. Interestingly, in the way of Texas politics, Whitmire first took over the State Senate seat from conservative Dem Jack Ogg back in 1982?1988? Jack being the father of the current Harris County DA, Kim Ogg.
So Whitmire is something of a law-and-order Democrat, rare species these days, and he clobbered Sheila something like 65% to 35%. With Kim Ogg altering course a bit back towards rationality and her father’s successor now the Mayor maybe we will see some efforts to cut down on the crime explosion in Houston. I’ve noted before that despite the rhetoric of the Houstonians “betters” in the Democratic Party hierarchy, the average citizen there still likes to see buglars and robbers get shot.
The downside of this is that it also means that Sheila Lee Jackson is going to remain in the US Congress.
