It shouldn't and probably won't, as long as McConnell runs the Senate. But I remember hearing the exact comment about the SCOTUS appointment, from I believe Schumer. The Senate shouldn't consider any appointments from Trump while he is under investigation by Mueller.

In terms of political rhetoric, sure. That's a legitimate card to play, to reduce the credibility of an opponent. Practically, though, there are plenty of political counterarguments ("still POTUS," "constitutional obligation to honor the process," "this is a good nomination," etc.) to keep the nomination on track.

You get an idea who a person owes money too, which potentially could influence behavior of the elected official that would benefit the owed business, and also himself. Conflicts of interest, gifts received, money given to charities, etc, etc.

Once they finish with Hillary's crap, then they can start on another person. There is a long line of contestants before we reach Trump.

I figure about 95.5% of the population clamoring for his taxes have no idea how to read them. They will no doubt fill boxes for each year. These are not the two, three, or four page returns most of us file.

If he ever rolled over and released them the next thing we would hear from the Dems is that he isn't releasing all of them because they can't find anything.

I figure about 95.%% of the population saying they don't care about his taxes, don't know how to read them either. It's not a question being able to read tax forms, as much as it is about knowing what they reveal.

“So coming into 2020 what can you tell us of your legislative accomplishments of the last 2 years?

    “Orange man bad!”

    “I see, is that all?”

”Yes, orange man bad, resist, hair funny.”

I'm sure Jim Acosta would be happy to interpret them. He's trustworthy and unbiased.

I actually meant to post 99.5%. Anyway, if they can't read/understand them, how will they know what they reveal?

Are you going to get any of that from a tax return?
I've no experience outside of my own personal taxes, but you might see I have a mortgage deduction, but not what company holds it. You'll see I made charitable contributions, but not who they went to, etc.
Unless the precedent is that making a "tax return" public includes all the receipts, 1099s, special forms, etc etc that went into creating the data for the return?
I admit I have 0 experience with either what the very wealthy have to include in a return, or business returns.

That's a basic fallacy. Not knowing how something works, doesn't mean you don't understand what it does.

I can't express a percentage, but there are enough of us who do review financial documents that could figger it out.

Plus, for me, it isn't as much about what the returns reveal - I expect them to reveal nothing untoward - it is that POTUS should willingly provide the clarity on the subject.

A naive question perhaps but what exactly is the infatuation with a president's tax returns? I understand that several willingly provided them but it isn't a requirement for the job. I'm guessing fishing expedition perhaps? The salmon may be running but it's still a fishing expedition. Or not?

Not any dumber than an obsession with a birth certificate.

    So.

ETA: It would be interesting to see the tax returns of career politicians from when they were born in poverty to where they have multiple houses and millions of dollars and see to whom they are beholden.

I'm all onboard with that... as long as they are under investigation.
