Traveling w/pistol via airlines?

Is it a big PITA to declare a pistol with the airlines? I have to make an emergency trip to Florida today and I will be driving home tomorrow. Since i usually drive both ways this question has never arised for me. I really just hate not being armed while driving home, thanks in advance for any info.

No worries, easy as pie. Have it unloaded, in an approved FAA lock box, store ammo separate. The website walks you right through it.
