They used to have only a small plaque nearby that read:

1st Ranger Battalion

On 19 August 1942, 50 Commando trained soldiers of the 1st Ranger Battalion, United States Army, participated in the raid on Dieppe. Attached to Canadian Infantry and British Commando units, they were the first United States soldiers to engage German armed forces in WWII.

Killed in Action: 2dLT Edward V Loustalot, 2dLT Joseph H. Randall, Tech 4 Howard M. Henry

These volunteers were the first United States soldiers to die for the liberation of France.

They led the way.

Now they have a more visible monument. All founded with private donations.

The old plaque is easily missed (on the right on the above pic) ... you don't have the flags and flowers all year around there.

More tourists and locals are now stopped at the new shiny monuments to see what it's all about.
There is a side in English and one in French.

My pleasure.

I was there today, very windy with lots of US flags everywhere.
There's a shop that sell them nearby, that and pirate flags (lot's of history of piracy in Dieppe too).

Dec 16,1944 was the start of the Ardennes Counteroffensive. Patton put an end to that.
