I think if we catch one of their fast boats unattended, that's something we could take out. He's kinda defined a very narrow parameter for response: blow up stuff but not people. So, he could still make that response.

(Caveat: I'm nearly positive that if he'd asked for a strike package meeting that criteria, a list would've been generated.)

As I see it, part of the new "normal" is that there's no downside for enemies to target and attack drones. That actually puts US service members at greater risk. We've already escorted some drones, now it seems likely that almost all of them will have HAVCAP or something like it.

It is only a suspicion, but I'd lean in favor of the Iranians here that our drone violated their airspace. And in the world of "right and wrong", blowing their **** up because we violated air space is pretty bad optics.

Sounds like as long as Iran doesn't kill anyone they are free to blow up all the **** they want.
    Yeah pretty much.
Its like all the people theyve killed in the past are forgotten. They keep giving iran a clean slate after every bad act.
Theyll have nukes next and then what? We need to stop them now. This is a terrorist regime. They do not have the sovereign right to have world destructive power.
This is like if we had the chance to stop the nazis before they started wwii. Iran will start wwiii if we give them the chance.

Yeah if anything it would have to be a different target package but at this point I think the window for a future strike concerning this particular incident has closed.

IDK...I think Trump made the right call here.

We lost a drone? Meh...that's what they're for. Launch another. Launch a hundred more. Let the Revolutionary Guard waste their energy swatting away our robot mosquitos. We gain nothing by engaging on their terms and their turf. If they want a fight make it on our terms...in the skies and on the seas. Make them launch their few remaining airworthy F-14s and their second-hand MIGs, pull them into blue water...make it expensive for them.

President Trump showed he (and we, by extension) value the lives of 150 foreign civilian strangers over a a quarter billion dollars of war machinery...I like the message that sends.

Cross-posting from the Nuclear Iran thread

:D If anyone wants to see familiar faces talking out of the other side of their ... avatar, go back and read the first couple of hundred posts in [that] thread (which pre-date the trump era). Its got everything, including Democrats saying 47 Republican senators sending a pre-deal letter to Iran stating the treaty will require a senate vote are committing treason and being supported by a few on INGO

I guess it really does matter if its your guy in the WH, point conceded

Agreed. This is how you do them on our terms

The Surface View: Operation Praying Mantis

    I especially love this part

H-Hour was set at 0800; at 0755, we warned the Sassan GOSP inhabitants in Farsi and English.

"You have five minutes to abandon the platform; I intend to destroy it at 0800."

    And this:

When his direction was ignored, the U. S. commander requested and was granted "weapons free" by CJTFME. He then advised the Joshan:

"Stop your engines and abandon ship; I intend to sink you."

I get it- never trust what the government says...unless it's the government of Iran.

Let's hear your views on Jet-A and structural steel.

    Could be anywhere

Having hardpoints and flying with a weapons load out are two different things. Carrying munitions reduces endurance, they wouldn't do it unless they were expecting a need to release.

As to striking Iran...I've wanted to do that since the 70's when I was in the Army. We should have surrounded Tehran with tanks and darkened the sky with aircraft and demanded the release of our hostages or we'd grind their grimy little country into the rubble. Instead we got a globalist response from a ***** president.

A nod to the Israeli Air Force might do the trick. It is hard to say what can and cannot be done. I served during Desert Shield/Desert Storm + 3-1/2 years (albeit, different commands) on station afterwards and I know things are different. The ground is still volatile and the "boots-on-the-ground" effort is not a good idea. A targeted and proportionate airstrike could send home a succinct message, yet will however bring a harsh tongue-lashing from "buffer between us and them " Putin regime. I don't really care what other nations feel on this or any matter, yet I feel that the paper-tiger cannot survive. I do still remember the embassy takeover and there is reprisal attitude I have towards them. I hope whatever is done, it does not lead a long occupational operation. The military industrial complex has shown to be a strange and fickle creature, and I do not trust it. As for our service members, I stand in support of them and am praying the "powers-that-be" will do what is needed. All will not agree, some will. ~~"One Man's Opinion!"

I blame the French for allowing the disease that was Khomeini to fester in their midst - and for what? So they could feel good about themselves? The game should be played for more tactical/tactile rewards

The Twitterer in Chief has apparently clarified his position on Iran to be: the first bite is free.

Now, "any attack on anything American" will be met with "great and overwhelming force." Now, I'm still not sure if that means "successful attack" or "attack" but I guess that'll get sorted out the next time Iran launches on a USian drone.

I won't begrudge him the "first bite free" mentality. It was a relatively small bite (after numerous attempts). But, it'll be difficult to walk this one back. This echoes Obama's red line comment.

    Hmmm,

I wonder if the Iranians power grid might suddenly flicker?
If all the cell phones went down for a few hours it might surprise them?
The Iranian interwebz might just show a Trump rally for a few days.
It would shame if the banking system went crazy and money went missing?
Ah, funny you would mention this. Iran has excellent hackers and have already proven that they can take down US assets, no problem. They developed the ability AFTER they caught the US rigging their centrifuges to blow.

A hacking technique was developed by the US under Bush then turned the hell loose on Iran under Obama. The Iranians countered by screwing up NYC pretty bad.

It's been a cyber standoff from then from what i've heard.
