Another idea, find a property (or properties) that already has the correct zoning & bring it up at the meeting. "There is no need to rezone additional land as there is existing property that is already purposed for this"
There is a Summit Juvenile center West of LaPorte - but that is LaPorte county ... where Valparaiso is Porter county

You and your neighbors have to attend every single meeting where this shows on the agenda. The more neighbors you can get involved the better for your argument against rezoning. If your group misses a meeting, that means something and it's not good for you. Remember.....all they need is one victory.

As noted earlier, get politicians who are on your side and get them involved, keep them engaged. Those not on your side you'll need to influence, that may require a "lobbyist". Yes, a lobbyist costs money, but they have and know how to make connections and cut through the red tape. The also know how to make the politicians uncomfortable.

I would think target shooting would still be allowed (at first) unless there is an existing prohibition to shooting next to an "institution". Obviously the town/county/city could later add such a prohibition. Another thought- if property is for sale, perhaps the money spent on lawyers, realtors, lobbyists, etc could be used instead to purchase the property. That's a pretty outlandish idea since money doesn't grow on trees and if you or others wanted the property presumably it would have already been purchased. If you do attend the meeting(s), be sure to post details.

Property has already been purchased by said people. Now they want to change things up...

Just remember that if they build it, and you're still allowed to shoot, when you fire those shots you will be making your place a target because they will know you have firearms to steal.
This, as soon as the corn comes down they will realize what is lurking on the other side...

Are they trying to change the actual zoning of the property or are they asking the BZA for a variance to allow the special use on the property? If there is a BZA hearing, keep in mind that ONLY info presented in that meeting can be used in an appeal (which would have to be filed in court within 30 days of the hearing). A court reporter being hired to record the BZA hearing is invaluable since you can then obtain a transcript (for a fee, of course) that can be used in any appeal that you might file. I know a good lawyer in Merrillville that helped us with a situation if you need a name. She isn't cheap, but she is good.

Most rural areas have a lot of property zoned Agricultural. Warehouses are often allowed in those areas.
That’s odd but I guess money gets a lot of things done.

Around here there is specific legislation in place to protect Ranges both public and Private, seemed a bit un necessarily until I started thinking about it.

Some suburbs of Indy are turning cornfields into subdivisions, others warehouses. If you're one of those in a rural home that backs up to a cornfield, those cornfield days are likely numbered.
Yeah no Cornfields here. We Grow Sorghum, we moved to our new place just for that reason it’s land locked on all sides and will be immune from any future growth.

That’s what we thought too 19 years ago. The farmer that owns the land around us isn’t selling, but they keep offering more and more money. Last offer was just shy of 6 figures per acre.

The land that warehouse is being built on was owned by the three kids. Two decided to sell at $80k an acre, the one that didn’t is the one that owns the property surrounding us. The kicker? They paved the road to the north of us and those people have fiber lines laid for high speed internet. Our 1/2 mile is still gravel and we can get 5-meg dsl.

We are fighting a new city jail just outside our neighborhood. The city/county are getting a lot of pushback, and it's getting interesting

Attend every meeting and remind these politicians this is an election year....

You can get DSL? We are cable free, no cell service, and we have a dish for internet. After several approved developments in the area we used to live in we sold our back forty and the subdivision that was behind us expanded. And 80 k an acre is not a lot to some builders.

We came out of it ok and moved on didn’t really feel bad about it because the building was happening whether we stayed or not. we were there less than 10 years and now we are where we will be. Thankfully we were able to purchase a parcel that will not be devein our lifetime.

So I guess I'm really ignorant on this stuff. Is this petitioner a sort of human cat lady who takes in foster kids and homeschools them for fun and profit a per-head government stipend?
