    Cant tell what that is.

    '97 Blazer

    Blazer

Or Bravada if he’s super fancy

Oh... I wish it was a Bravada... at least the front axle in those things is in some sort of demand. Nothing on that Blazer is worth saving.

    ---

Story: I've owned 3 other S10s, all 2wd, 4 cyl, 5 speed, pickups. All fantastic vehicles and tough as nails. I thought I "knew S10s pretty well" so I brought this one home from a co-worker who drove it to the point that one of the rear tires dismounted from the rim. Paid $400 with a target of $1k for a running, driving, safely operating 4x4 and he drove it to my house. I knew it didn't have rear brakes and he had been driving it like that for at least a year. That was all I really knew. It ran awesome (still does run awesome). I have 4 studded snow tires, mounted on S10 wheels, so that part of the plan was what sold it. 4x4 on studs on all corners? Sign me up.

Well, turns out 4x4 S10 Blazers are nightmare boxes and some of the most poorly engineered vehicles on the planet. As soon as it hit the driveway it started leaking fuel. Mouse knows this part of the story with where GM ran all five(!!!) fuel, evap, and brake lines. They all failed. All of the rear brake lines failed. Front not too far behind. Lots of fun screwing with that... still not entirely done screwing with that... Cheap, but annoying.

Then pulled the dipstick. Completely dry. Never noticed a puddle under it at work..? Poured more than 4 quarts back in it before it read full. As it sat in my driveway the puddle developed. They run a remote oil filter and the soft lines fail. It appears to be a massive nightmare to service. There are soft lines up to an oil cooler in the rad too and are for sure not going to be a good time. I haven't even been able to see them yet.

And the rear suspension is about to fall out of it, literally (shackles)... and the rear end is probably trashed from what looked like a failed wheel seal... and it takes on water like the Titanic because the roof seals failed, and... and... It's garbage.

BUT... I'm only asking the thing for like 10,000 miles, tops, made all in 10-15 mile increments. I just want to keep the Escort and my Jeep out the snow with the plan being the Jeep becomes a restoration project before too long and the Blazer and the Escort get me through the next 3-5 years until the other daily driver plan comes together.

Right now, excluding the brand new "summer" tires I bought it for that can go on any car, I'm on the razor's edge of the $1k if nothing else goes wrong. I'm thinking it's going to be more like $2k and I bet I could get a way nicer Blazer (not that I'd buy a second one) with far fewer of these issues.

Anyhow... It's getting pressure washed tomorrow so I can at least find the freaking oil leaks for sure and get the thing wheeled into the shop before someone complains about the oil spill in the rented driveway. And life being full of the odd twists that tend to happen, and completely against all odds, I have somehow become a very, very small social media "influencer" and have accepted free de-greaser to use on the thing and they're asking where their video is (nicely). So... I need to get that done because I made a commitment and because I just need to get it done.

    Anyhow.. It's a garbage box.

I challenge anyone to find a better all-around sports car for the price than a C5. Good luck.

I haven't been keeping up on the market, but the only thing I could imagine is a C6 Z. I think by the time you had a base C5 hanging with one, you could have bought the C6.

Like you, I aspire to find these things out on a long enough timeline. I'm presently a dancing monkey with a greasy Blazer for free cleaners. :laugh6:

So Corvette owners absolutely hate my GT500.
Even more than my wife's Super Stock.
We attend a car show a few weeks back. Corvette owners had nothing but bad comments. Like it's just a Mustang?

It's a freaking SHELBY GT 500! It will outrun a C8 and handles just as good. I don't think I will ever understand Vette owners.

Didn't you have your papers in hand that explained that your car is only 1 of 19 because of a dash stitching color and it has heated mirrors and fart sniffing seats? That would have impressed the car-fudds.

I've met some really cool 'vette guys and I've met the guys you met. Personally, I'd be pumped to see a new Shelby in the wild. The dealer had one in the bay when I took the Escort in for an alignment. Sweet rides for sure. Like he said though, that's a lot of cheddar for a Mustang. That's not anything against the car, but more against Ford for sort of abandoning the performance poors.

The C6 Z’s are still in the $40k range. Slap a procharger kit and some sticky tires on a base C5 and it would walk away from a Z for nearly half the price.

I am down with Vettes. I Like any fast car. Even the crazy import dudes.
    I guess I don't like snobs?

If you are into donks I can respect you ride and the $$ and time you spent on it.

It's not my thing but I won't talk crap about it.
I am seeing a whole new side to the box/Donk thing. In the end when all this Tonka toy cars blows over there will be some well turned out big chevys out there that will not need a lot to make them into nice street cars if that be your desire.

CP, in the meantime how are you liking your new ride?

Loving it. Took the whole family out for ice cream the other night because it has three seats in the back. Thanks Dodge. I’m digging the color too. It really pops in the sunlight. Doesn’t come across in pictures that well but it’s sharp in person. The new shifter is a game changer. It’s amazing how sloppy the factory ones are. It had a Mopar ball shift knob on it but I actually switched back to the factory “pistol-grip” one.

When I went to a smaller shop, I said I wouldn't let the crazy take over again. It's a real struggle to keep it somewhat in control.

Transitioning from a home owner to being a renter, I fight the same battle. Anything I bring in I already know has to have a direct path back to the exit. In fact, I should probably cull the hoard again and get rid of a bunch more of "someday" stuff.

I'm getting better at seeing "someday's" for what they are: pipe dreams full of good intentions. I've got so much on my plate right now and I've actually started seeing the light on some of it thanks to my improving ability to recognize "someday's" in someone else's junk pile before they become "someday's" in my junk pile. :rockwoot:

Yep. I kicked about 80% of that pile to the curb when I moved and I've maybe re-grown about 5% of it since then, but I've done nothing with the other 20% since then. Probably time to let that 20% move on down the line too.
