What are your thoughts on the new Criminal Justice Reform bill?

The left seems to love it (first clue) while conservatives seem to hate it.

Yet I saw it passed the Senate 87-12.

LE Associations have written letters against it.

Seems Jared is getting all the praise for pushing it.

Can't imagine Trump vetoing a bill that passed 87-12 in the Senate and pushed by his son-in-law.

Is this going to make America more or less safe?

Or is it much ado about nothing?

I can't seem to find it now, but I thought I heard on the news this morning that the bill also included the elimination of the Obama-era policy of schools not reporting criminal behavior by their students in order to make crime stats look better and keep Federal funding. The Parkland shooter was shielded by this policy IIRC. I may have heard wrong... it was early.

Yeah, I'm skeptical because this didn't get very much coverage and it has been passed by a lame duck legislative branch. Why now?

It may be fine, but I just don't know very much about it.

    ETA:
Quick googling and it looks like the sequel to the 2010 Get Out of Prison Early Bill. Nothing hugely different, just some incremental reductions in how long criminals serve.

So, meh. Not like spending more or less time in prison really makes any difference anymore.

I’ve thought of prison and its effects. If I did something white collar dumb and spent a week in true prison i’d Think that would be enough for me to never want to do anything that could land me back there again. But after a few years... probably something you get used to in a way. I’m sure there are formal studies and actual educated people who discuss this but it’s just my musings

doesn’t this bill do a lot for reducing MJ sentences?

edit: no, it lowered crack cocaine sentences in line with powder forms. And this is federal prison system only
