I was out in my garden and a couple older neighbors stopped by. Discussion turned to Sweetcorn and how to tell when its ready for picking. Between them, what I learned from Grandpa and what 1 other neighbor added later.... there seems to be many right ways to tell (or not). How do you know its time to pick your corn? The kernels themselves? The silk? The husks? The leaves? For yrs I thought I knew....... what is the consensus here?

Start checking when the silks start to darken and dry.
Pick an ear and check it by pressing your thumbnail into a kernel. It should be soft and full of whitish juice.
Repeat every day until it is ready.

Harvest one day before it is perfect (otherwise the raccoons will harvest it the night before it is perfect).

I worked on a sweet corn farm from 6th grade until I graduated high school...ugh. We would go to the end of the row, walk in a couple feet, and look at the silks. If they were nice and dark, we'd peel back the husk a little bit. If it looked ready, we'd take a bite. If it tasted good, we'd start picking the row.
