Swearing Makes Pain More Tolerable - Yahoo! News

"Swearing has been around for centuries and is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon," said Richard Stephens of Keele University in England and one of the authors of the new study. "It taps into emotional brain centers and appears to arise in the right brain, whereas most language production occurs in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain."

    Just thought you should know!!!!!:D

I welcome everyone who wants to, to open their mouths right now and let out a cleansing string of profanity. Make it as loud and raunchy as you can or want. Repeat as necessary. Do it on the front porch and let the world hear your voice if it makes you feel better.

Just don't type the words in this forum.

    Thanks!

I agree, if I am in a bad mood or something happens that makes me mad, a few choice words at the proper volume does help.

I don't see how they could possibly help on here though.

    Where's the bacon?
It may be good for you.

It's not good for your membership on INGO.

It's not good for our membership, either. If people would let this go, we might have already been back to the PG-13 standard.

    Blessings,
    Bill

You ever notice how less common it is to swear/exclaim when hurt and you are alone? I read a neat book awhile back on extreme medicine, e.g. jungle, arctic, etc.

Apparently the urge to shout, and now curse, when hurt is a survival mechanism to draw attention for help. Less common when alone as you don't want to draw in a predator.

I'm wierd then, cause I curse more and louder when I'm alone and I have just got hurt. Must be my need for anyone far away to hear me and come to my aid!:):

I don't think that it has to be swearing. That is just making the information found "cool and special and different like a snowflake." I imagine any vocal outburst, not matter the content, makes a person "feel" better.

For the record, I swear and I do it mostly at video games. Why? It makes me feel better when nazi zombies finally do me in.

That might actually somewhat explain why people with Terret's syndrome tend to curse during vocalized outbursts. I've always wondered why the cursing/swearing with Terret's, but that might have something to do with it? :dunno:

Anyone have a better idea as to why that may be? Sorry if this is a threadjack, it seemed to be related.
