I think he should get a Henry 001 lever rifle from KARLS GUNBUNKER for $319. Karl gets them from SOG. Get it in 17HMR and get the rifle with red and green fiber optic sites. It's fairly cheap to shoot, accurate and will bring down small game. I had a chance to look at one at Gander Mountain and it is a really neat gun. Karl is about $130 cheaper than Gander.

Most of the rifles mentioned ARE HEAVY.

Heavy enough they may not enjoy carrying them very far in the hunting field.

For that - I'd come closer to recommending a Savage 30G - Favorite, single shot, light as a feather and reasonably accurate.

The Mossberg M44 is hard to beat for the money.

Decent target sights, a trigger that can be worked on as their shooting improves - and a good piece of history to boot.

It isn't going to win any serious competitions, but it will surely get you in the game and let them play around enough to know if they really are interested.

    But it is HEAVY.

i would say you can't go wrong with a .22
you can always move up to something bigger
if he's ready for it. and plus even if you
get a bigger gun you still usually need a .22
for something. doesnt matter how old you are.
theyre just a great gun for starter and for fun
