To make a long story short I was in the market for a gun safe. I didn't/don't know a whole lot about the ins and outs of them. I know I didn't want a cheap china safe from Menards or Tractor Supply. I had heard good things about Johnson safes on here so I gave him a call. I asked him about his safes and what the lead time was. He said if I ordered now I could have it around January. Holy cow. I had no idea the lead time was that long. That immediately removed that one from my choices. I checked another place on the north side "Independence Safe Company" I was looking for a Liberty safe. They had nothing. The only thing they had were some import safes coming in 3 weeks or so.

This was kinda disappointing but I guess it's follow the gun market. I tried online and looked at "Steelwater Safes" but they too were out of the "better" versions and even their lower level safes had a 3+ week lead time. I ended up going with an American Security (AMSEC) safe. I was told these are made in the USA and are decent quality. Anyone had any experience with them?

I also looked at SecureIT but they had a very long wait time and the interior storage capacity was pretty small.

Our very large LGS used to have probably 40 or so on the floor. When I stopped in the other day to just browse, I noticed they had zero.

Id just get on the Johnson wait list. I think it's going to be awhile before things like safes are fully stocked again. And when they do the price will be even higher. Won't be any holiday sales of any sort with stock so low. Good Luck

Honestly, 3 weeks doesn't sound that bad, if you've done without one for your life up until now. I think I waited at least that long for mine.

I waited for 6 months for my Liberty from Independence Safe Company. The wait for Johnson at the time was going to be about 11 months according to Jeff at the time I went out to his place and spoke to him last July.

Where did you get your Amsec? I think I looked at them and Fort Knox I believe, but the dealer where I was looking at them wasn't a high volume dealer and it was going to cost me shipping to them and then delivery from them to me. It jacked up the price too much.

It doesn't help OP here, but it may others.

This website is a veritable treasure trove of most excellent information about gun safes. "gun safes" vs Safes.

I did take a quick look at that. Even the TLDR version was very long lol. If you have plenty of time I highly advise going through the link though. It was good information.

Cool, be interested to hear what you think of it. What kind of lead time for the Amsecs, if any?
Ordered yesterday, got the shipping notification today. They have their top of the line models from $5000 and the lowest price model they have is $889.

They are made in the USA.

I didn't go with the top of the line. Would like to have, but didn't want to drop 5k on a safe just yet. I got something in the middle.

Got it today. It's about 900 lbs. Not sure how to judge it really. Inside is kind of awkward with the shelves and all. You can move it around but I ended up taking most of them out. It was a huge biatch to move. I doubt anyone would bother trying to haul it out.

    Don't be so sure.

Also - it's way easier to just pry or cut them open than it is to carry the whole thing away (Thought that's been done, too)
