I may be trading for a nice Smith and Wesson 686-6 , 2.5” revolver. Unfortunately it is equipped with the lock.
My question is are they worth much with the lock ? I would be trading a mint 1971 Marlin golden 39a. Thanks Jesse
The smith and Wesson 686 has the box and paperwork. It’s a very nice , relatively unused firearm

Might want to consider the price of a new 39A from Marlin's custom shop (with the safety) - around $2500, as I recall-If they still make em,

No kidding ? I didn’t realize they had went up that much. I just don’t use the 39a much at really. I’ve always just collected Marlin JM guns.

I would love to have that 39a and probably shooting myself in the foot as I would've made you a offer but you should be looking for a good Coonan trade not a S&W 686-6 trade.

I bought a very good condition 1979 39A for around $450 back in 2012. I saw one sell on gunbroker with box papers not too long ago for a hair over $1300! No joke , and this was not even a older 39A but a newer one with a the hammer block safety. I also have a 1996 39AS and would probably trade it for an older 686-4 if it was a different barrel length from the ones I have now.

    Myself, I would not trade a mint 1971 39A for a newer 686.

39a prices have climbed steadily the past few years. As someone that is semi-seriously looking for one, I can tell you that prices range from about $500 to well over $1000. A few year ago, $750 or less would buy you something in excellent condition.

Recently completed and SOLD auctions on gunbroker range from $479 to $4735. My guess is the average would be something between $900 and $1000. There have been lots of bidders on 39a and lots of guns available.

The 686s have also been red hot on GB lately with steep prices even on lock models. I could see a mint/used 686-6 bringing $800 to $900 or so-ish.

That being said - those are Gunbroker insanity prices and I don't think Indiana FTF sale are paying that. My LGS conversation with owners support that.

Also, the 39a has better "investment" potential than a 686-6.

It is your call - but if it was me (and I am a SW fan), I'd rather be the guy getting the 39a in that deal.

Thank you for your input. I do appreciate that. I will probably hang on to the 39a for now .. I had a local guy that usually tries to hose everyone offer me 450$ .. I just laughed a little and told him I’ll pass

Your are most welcome. Yeah that $450 is a a joke. Had a shop offer me $200 for my SIG P239 not long ago and I said I would rather just give it to someone. Anyway here is that 39 I mentioned in post #13.

The 39A and 39M are a couple of my favorite rifles and I own a couple of both. That being said I’m also a big S&W wheel gun fan. My guns are older than yours with some honest wear but still pretty nice. I’d be pretty tempted to trade for one of the 3” 29s or 629 pre locks or a 610, but a 686 3” with a lock I think I’d pass on. In the end though sometimes it’s not so much the economics of a trade as it is in what you really want. I’ve made some trades that haven’t made economic sense but I got what I wanted. You have a beautiful rifle that would be hard to replace.
