Many 'smart' weapons are leased. I don't know about 'all', but 'many'.
When you come offline, the weapons are cleared from the weapon platform, and sent back to the mfger.
Where it gets checked out and upgraded.
When you go back online, you load weapons again. Probably not the ones you sent in, just the next ones on the list.


When the sub pulled into port, torps were offloaded and sent to the station.
Pretty sure it wasn't just us.

Leased? More likely sold with a maintenance/upgrade contract. Pretty sure the Navy, as opposed to the manufacturer owned the torpedos. I could be wrong, but leasing expendable ordnance doesn't seem likely. But wadda i know.
