My oldest daughter was also born 6 weeks early, she started kindergarten this year and is perfectly healthy. She was in NICU for 2.5 weeks before being discharged. Keep up the positive thoughts and everything will be fine. As others have said, make sure and take care of yourself too. Also don’t forget mom, she needs you through this tough time as well. After ours was born, it was 3 days before my wife and was able to leave her room to go see the little one, take lots of pictures and videos!

Another tip for you that helped a ton for us financially. If you and your wife are on separate insurance plans, be sure to put the little one on both plans. It will be a doubling of premiums until the next open enrollment, but it will likely significantly help your out of pocket expenses from NICU. Our gross charges before insurance were in the 6 figure range and we paid no out of pocket to the hospital.

    Prayers are being continuously sent...

"Stepping up"is great but please take care of YOU also. Remember to at least eat (hospital vending machines don't count) to keep your strength up. Sleeping is over rated and I wouldn't be able to in there myself. Sorry you guys are going through this. Keep us informed.

At least you get to keep up on the soap operas...

My son spent the forst 5 days of his life in NCU. Those nurses are the next best thing to an angel. Rest a bit easy knowing he is in good hands all the way around. I will pray for a speedy recovery.

You guys probably remember this from the last children, but get some rest. Things are going to be busy getting the little guy settled in and on a schedule.

My whole family is praying for yours.
Remember, when you get him home, how hard he fought to be able to yell and scream the way he will;)

Update: no setbacks since earlier, and the trend still seems to be upward.

Wife and I are touched by the support. She's feeling better physically than with previous births, which is awesome. As for me...I'm going strong. Fortunately I've got the constitution of a horse, but know my limits and how far to push without mental collapse/public nudity/several paragraphs in the police blotter. I'm taking care to make it through the whole thing intact and ready for dad duty with all 4 kiddos.

In other news, we each got over an hour just rocking the little fella and holding him close. Of all the things I've done in my life, this time with him is already amongst the most rewarding. I couldn't help but notice that in the midst of all this, my face hurts because I've had a stupid smile plastered across it every moment I've had with him. I'm damn fortunate.

Solid tip on the insurance. We're stacking policies, but are still likely to end up with a sizeable chunk for the specialists. That, of course, doesn't matter at all and I'd bankrupt us 100 times over if needed, but it would be good not to live in a tent forever. Luckily I gave them Churchmouse's info for billing so I should be alright until he finds me. Fortunately his choice in holsters all but guarantees that he'll shoot himself before he gets his sights on me.

Congrats on the new Boy! If he's anything like his old man, he won't have any trouble getting through this.
