I'd like to keep the total under $225, this will be a defensive/SHTF type rifle. I'm running a Mid Length gas system with a low profile gas block, so I'm thinking maybe a 12" rail...

Have you thought about a modular/customizable hand guard? That way the tube is smooth everywhere except where you bolt on a piece of rail. Way more comfortable and ergonomic.

yankee hill, Samson, midwest industries, diamondhead, Nordic components, Troy, and JP all make some nice ones worth looking at. I have a diamondhead vrs-t that's going on my current build, and I like it.

Yankee Hill Diamond Series Midlength is what I run on mine with that awesome screw in endcap. Really gives it a clean look. I'll post pics when I can.

Looks very clean with Magpul rail covers too, the ones that fit in flush with the picatinny. However, if you get one be very careful how much blue thread lock you use on the retaining screws when you install it and dont over tight. I have snapped the head off one of those screws very easily. But when I contacted Yankee Hill they sent me out 6 new screws so I have plenty of backups now :)
