Business took me to Illinois for the day and I couldn't resist stopping at a Bass Pro on the way home. I went to the gun counter to see what kind of selection was available to the unfortunate citizens of the state to the left of us.

I was surprised to see so many pocket and carry sized handguns for sale. Why do they even stock LCPs, P380s, or even Glock 26? Why is there a market for them if carry is not allowed?

Sometimes it's not because it's a convenient carry size but more that the smaller guns fit people with smaller hands.
I suspect that its more about people who are defying the law and carrying illegally.

In fact I know some people in Illinois who are generally upstanding citizens but who, when they go through some of the more dicey areas, will illegally carry a gun. They follow the "judged by 12 rather than carried by 6" philosophy.

BPS, in Gurnee? WI has a waiting period and IL has a slightly longer waiting period, you can buy a gun in IL if you live in WI, and I'm sure they get a lot of folks local to southern WI that go to the big box store for their first gun because there's a stigma of shady characters, dark small stores that lack oxygen in favor of the smell of solvent and gun oil; going to BPS, well heck they're just going to the mall, no big evil plot there. Coming out of sheepdom takes some time for some folks.

There are also many hopefuls in IL, and many in IL have difficulty finding a shop in WI, IA, MO, IN or KY that will sell to them to the dramatic increase in paperwork regulation and law, and these folks still go take their class get their UT and FL and AZ permits and attempt to travel to the free country as much as they're allowed. You also need to consider the LE market, that looks for off duty guns. I'm absolutely 100% there are people carrying outside of the law in IL everyday, but I don't think that's prime market for carry guns. And IL salesmen have the perfect line of 49 other states have concealed carry, it's only a matter of time before you'll want that not just for the night stand but your purse as well, and I indeed heard something to that effect in Cabelas, 2 years ago in WI before they had CCL.

WI residents that buy a handgun in IL must take delivery from an FFL in their own state. Federal law requires it.

Many Illinoisians have CCW from other states, and carry when outside IL. We also can carry in our homes, our property or in our fixed place of business or anywhere that we have permission from the owner. That's state law. Local ordinances (Chicago/Oak Park) may differ.

Just because they appear to be a socialist state on the outside doesn't mean they are on the inside. It's not illegal for people to own guns there, it's just a pain in the ass depending where you may reside and depending where you are in the state, sometimes law enforcement looks the other way. I had a friend of mine roll his truck after hitting a deer, his 9mm ended up laying in the roof after coming out from under his seat. LEO on the scene asked him to explain the gun so he went into detail about the gun's model number and how it shot. He told him to "put it away" somewhere else out of sight, that was down in Southern IL.

+10 to your friend for a brilliant response in what was probably a stressful situation. And +100 to the officer for being a decent human and using his discretion in this instance.

No need for a +10. The friend was probably ignorant of the law. The LEO was probably a good guy and gave him a break. But the friend should have simply followed IL law.

The state of Illinois has very good, very easy to comply with "transport" laws and it is LEGAL to transport a gun in your car's glovebox or armrest provided it is unloaded. The loaded magazine can be next to the gun. This law applies to IL residents with a FOID card or any non-resident with a LTCH.

In some jurisdictions there will be issues (Cook County) but in rural IL the above is the law.

Nope he was pretty familiar with the law, he chose to not be a sheeple. I grew up in Chicago, lived in Central and Southern IL for a number of years. Outside of Chicago it's a completely different ball game. I know a number of people who follow the judged by 12 not carried by 6

I drive into Illinois virtually every day with a gun.

I'm not a "sheeple" but I follow the very simple laws.

Your friend, if he actually knew the law, simply chose to violate it. That is just stupid. He got lucky the officer was a good guy.

As stated, the Illinois transport laws are VERY EASY TO COMPLY WITH and very sane. They do require the gun be unloaded. But if you are driving with an auto-pistol that is not a big deal. People are mistaken when they travel into Illinois because they presume that the laws are horrible. In fact the gun transport laws in Illinois are still better than our new and improved Indiana transport laws.

Remember one of Freeman's Laws of Firearms: the less you know about firearms, the smaller the pistol you want.

Bass Pro carries them because they sell.

Armed Programmer's counter-corollary,,. If you carry something brutally oversized (think Desert Eagle) you're probably compensating for something.... :):

    Just sayin'....

You are missing the point of what I stated. Don't over analyze it and I never said you nor I nor my friend was ignorant of the law or unfamiliar with it. He chose like many others not to be a potential victim and would rather be judged by 12 and not carried by 6. My friend does not travel to IL daily, he resides there as he grew up there like I did and countless other friends of mine. I just got back from Chicago for a funeral. I case my pistol when I go up there, mag separate.

I understood exactly what you wrote and didn't over analyze it.

When you go into IL you don't have to case your pistol, you can simply stick it in your glove box. Take the magazine out and lay it next to your pistol.

I don't have room in my glove box :) so I keep a soft padded case in my center counsel so it's not just bouncing around freely. I don't like the thunk sound every time I turn.

What state government form do you have to fill out to be allowed to look at guns?
