Don't know if any site changes were made, but yesterday I was viewing one of the "funny picture" threads and my computer used up all available memory and then shut the site down with the white page message "ran out of memory".

I have 16 gig ram of which 8 gig is available for my browsing. I opened Task Manager and watched my Google Chrome memory use skyrocket when I opened up seemingly any of the picture threads. As soon as it shut the site down my PC memory returned to normal.

Any suggestions, or something that the site specialist needs to look at?

    Will check Firefox.

But in the event it is more than just Chrome and it's oversight, one of the threads I was talking about, and sorry if it is more than just "photos". Guess my use of words wasn't sufficient, sorry.

More than a couple of photos and other interesting stuff. I could explain it better if I knew why suddenly while viewing this and several other copy and paste threads set my PC off. I did run a deep virus scan just in case and nothing showed.

So after 15 years on this site, using the same browser, suddenly it is a browser issue?

Granted it is possible that Google suddenly decided to trash firearm sites. I wouldn't put it past them.

Do you have access to another machine to try it with Chrome? Would be curious to see the result. Won't tell you everything as there may be different settings, etc but would be a good indicator.

Interested to hear what others using Chrome experience on those threads.

I don't use Chrome so can't help to test it.

I am using Safari on a iPhone 13 connected to my Home WiFi

Just tried the Link with Chrome, FF, and Brave on Android w no issues except for all the ads while using Chrome.

When odd results like this happen with browsers, the first thing to always remember to do is clear your browser cache and cookies. This usually can fix a lot of odd things. Ymmv. :ingo:

The first thing I'd do is a reboot. We often forget how many times this fixes issues.

Next, I'd check for Windows updates. Then make sure Chrome is up to date.

Please do those things and report back.

Tried thread using Chrome on same iphone 13

took 45 seconds for all the Pics / Videos to load / Display

    Made this reply in Chrome
Chrome on iPhone isn’t really Chrome. Every single browser on an iPhone is using the Safari WebKit. They’re really just different “skins” for Safari. In order for an app to be listed on the App Store, they must comply with this requirement. Really hoping IOS 17, which is supposed to allow sideloading (in the EU anyway), changes things.

It gets really annoying because if something isn’t working on one browser, you’re probably going to have that same issue on all other browsers as well.

I have no problem with the site using my iPad but that uses Apple's Safari.

Rebooted computer, ran diagnostics on RAM, no problems found. Ran full virus scan, no problems found. H

Have Windows 11 on automatic updates. Just ran a Google update. Give me a second to reboot Google and recheck the threads that caused my issue.

Updated Google Chrome, opened thread titled : Funny Picture/Video Thread Part VIII...

After a few seconds I again got the "Oh Snap" with the notice "ran out of memory". I had Task Manager opened and watched the % memory climb until the page crashed.

Since that is the only type of thread that I am having problems with, I guess I will avoid them on my PC and read them on my iPad.

Granted it might be a Google Chrome issue but at my point of life and computer use I am not really in the mood to try other browsers. Called an "old age thing". :)

An iPad Pro has essentially replaced my laptop. I’m always on here on my iPad. Haven’t had any issues.

Did you clear your cache/cookies? Could be a caching issue.

Thanks MidwesternStructures! I am pretty close to the same situation with my iPad replacing my desktop. I give my daughter credit for dragging her daddy into the modern age!

Added - Yes I cleared the cache and cookies. My thought too that it was a cache issue. Since my desktop is fairly new I might just give the manufacturer a call.

Does your chrome browser have any extensions or plugins installed (purposely or not)? Chrome is susceptible to drive by extension installs.

Try starting chrome in safe mode and see if it still happens.

I know fire fox has protections against this which is why I suggested it. I haven’t had an out of memory error in over a decade.

Had to reply on my iPad. Opening most threads on INGO now causing out of memory crashes.

I did find a Chrome plugin for off network saves and deleted it. The only other plugin is my anti virus.
