Oh my. I can understand how both sides reacted the way they did in this one, but nothing good is going to come from a situation like this one. I'd probably try to get the heck out of there too if an Escalade dumped a few armed men onto the pavement at the gas station and they started running toward my car.

Watch the video and there is a section with footage of the actual shooting - though you can't see it very well.

Friends: Pastor Mistakenly Killed In Drug Sting - Local News Story - WYFF Greenville

STEPHENS COUNTY, Ga. -- A pastor was shot and killed following a drug sting in Stephens County, Ga., on Tuesday, and the officers involved and friends of the pastor are giving different versions of what led up to the shooting.

Jonathan Ayers, image from his blog

The Stephens County coroner confirmed that 28-year-old Jonathan Ayers was pronounced dead at Stephens County Hospital on Tuesday.

Ayers, a father-to-be, was the pastor of the Shoal Creek Baptist Church. He maintained a personal blog linked off the church's Web page, jonathanayers.blogspot.com.

Sheriff Randy Shirley said that officers had been involved in an undercover drug sting at an unnamed establishment in Toccoa. He said the target of the sting was a passenger in Ayers' car. Shirley said Ayers dropped the woman off and went to the Shell station. He said the officers followed Ayers there.

    Watch surveillance video

Shirley said, outside the Shell station, the plain-clothes officers identified themselves with a badge. The officers said that Ayers put his car in reverse and struck an agent. They said they opened fire on Ayers when he drove toward the second officer. Two shots were fired in the car, one hit Ayers. The officers said Ayers sped away and crashed about a half mile from the Shell station. They said they found him conscious and alert, but he died a short time later.

The woman who was the subject of the drug sting was arrested, but police are not identifying her yet. She is charged with selling cocaine. Other charges against her are pending.

Investigators said they did not find drugs in Ayers' car.

"They deserve punishment," said Ayers' sister, Rebecca Floyd. "They deserve to feel somewhat of the pain we're feeling, because I can't get my brother back he's gone forever."

Floyd said there's no way her younger brother would have run if he would have known the men who had guns were officers. The officers were undercover and weren't in uniform, but investigators said they had badges around their necks and clearly identified themselves.

"I think anyone in that situation would run," Floyd said. "I know I would. If someone pulled up to me with guns, I would run."

She said her brother was known to help strangers.

"I could bet my life on it he did not know her," she said. "I could bet my life on it, because that's the kind of person he was. He was a good Christian man, and that was his goal was to lead souls to Christ."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to look at the case. It's still interviewing witnesses and will match those stories to what the officers say happened.

Floyd said her brother's first baby is due in February.

"I'm just heartbroken this baby will never see his daddy or her daddy," she said. "He'll never get that opportunity."

Floyd said she's praying for answers and the strength for forgiveness.

"That's the type of person my brother was," she said. "He would forgive the person who shot him."

Friends who have been discussing Ayers' death in online forums and in e-mails said, unlike the police description of the shooting, they believe Ayers may have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

One of many e-mails received by WYFF News 4 said:

"Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, Jonathon Ayers was shot and killed by a Toccoa police officer. Ayers was at a walk-up ATM machine to get money to have tires put on his wife's car. After getting his money, he saw men running at him. Thinking he was to be robbed, he ran for his car. He was shot through the door and the bullet went through his lung and liver. He eventually wrecked his car and was taken to Stephens County Hospital. The bleeding of his liver could not be stopped and Ayers died in surgery.

"Later, it was found that the police officer who shot him thought Ayers was involved in a drug deal. When Ayers ran, the officers open fired. GBI and NCIS are involved in this investigation.

"Ayers was pastor of Shoal Creek Baptist Church of Lavonia. He leaves behind a wife and expecting child.

"Ayers was simply at the wrong place, at the wrong time."

The GBI agent in charge of the investigation, Mike Ayers, said, "The shooting happened at the intersection of Broad Street and Currahee Street at a Shell station."

He said, "Yesterday at approximately 3 p.m., we were contacted by the Stephens County Sheriff's Department. There was an officer-involved shooting in Stephens County in the city of Toccoa … Yesterday, the sheriff's department and district attorney's office requested that the GBI conduct an investigation into that shooting, which did lead to a fatality."

Mike Ayers said, "At this time, I really can't release any specific information concerning the investigation."

"This is one of those tasks the GBI typically gets involved in anytime an officer is involved in a shooting," Mike Ayers said.

News 4's Kisha Foster spoke to a woman outside Shoal Creek Baptist who identified herself as Jonathan Ayers' sister-in-law. She described him as a "godly man." She said there are "a lot of lies going around about what happened, and the police department is trying to cover up what they did."

The two agents are on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is complete.

I will never understand the logic of standing in the way of a moving car, then claiming it was an attack, and even then retaliating and killing a driver for it.

Don't stand in the way of cars and then act like you did not see it coming. That's just ME.

There was nothing accidental in this matter. The police pulled their guns, aimed them and squeezed the trigger multiple times. That's not an accident, it's not a mistake. They'll paint it that way to avoid responsibility for their actions, tho. GA police have a distressing record where the war on drugs is concerned.

First and foremost, this is another case where the UC agents could have waited for a marked car.

The police cannot expect for a law abiding person to not freak out when someone jumps in front of them with a gun. All they see is "mad man with a gun screaming". You don't hear "police" and definitely don't see the tiny badge being (most likely) blocked by the gun.

Yeah, I agree with the sister, it was a murder.

+1 to Boilers, if a person jumps in front of a moving car, don't be surprised when you get hit. The idea of a cop claiming "self defense" when they purposefully jumped in front (or behind) of a moving car is B.S. not to mention stupid.

A man was murdered over POSSIBLE prostitution charges and POSSIBLE misdemeanor possession of pot. "Good police work Lou" :xmad:

Watching the video it is clear that the officer was not just standing there waiting for the car to run into him. Take a deep breath, clear your mind, and watch it.

It is also clear the officer that was hit stayed on his feet. IT DIDN'T EVEN KNOCK HIM DOWN. I mean "OUCH!"

The OP clearly says COCAIN NOT POT. These are two totally different drugs and deserve two totally different levels of treatment.

I am shocked that the cops opened fire on this unidentified individual after rolling up on him like they did... that said, there are millions of people out there, and if this sort of thing happens one in a million, then the cops are doing a pretty good job IMHO.

OK. Can I get any more on the fence?

    Again...tragic loss.

Rule number one: Don't try to run down the police...you'll probably not win that battle.

Rule number two: Don't associate with drug dealers. It will eventually turn out bad.

This is however, reportedly how the incident transpired according to the police. At this time I have no reason not to believe their account. Until evidence is gathered that proves otherwise...

Perhaps it was all "wrong place wrong time...perhaps not. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds. None the less...tragic. :twocents:

Thank God I wasn't in anyone's shoes there.

But what about when a mad man with a gun jumps in front of your car? Do you stop or do you try to get away?

When someone pulls a pistol on you, it is really hard to see that tiny badge hiding behind that HUGE gun.

Sadly, just one more innocent life lost in the stupid and useless "war on drugs". Legalize the damn things, regulate and tax them like alcoholic beverages. All the money saved could be used to fund obamacare. All the lives saved would be priceless.

And again...because I was not there...can only assume the accounts give by the police are true and accurate. That they were wearing badges and did announce themselves as law enforcement. I have heard no statements from witnesses to the contrary.

I will withhold judgment on anyone until all the facts are presented. Lots of facts to gather...it will be interesting to see the outcome.

Wow, unbelievable. You can't really tell much from the video beside the fact that they approached from behind. If I saw a black vehicle pull in behind me, men jump out with guns drawn, I sure wouldn't be looking for a badge. I would've done the exact same thing. This is absolutely terrible. While I won't say that the cops are to blame for taking the action that they did (I don't believe the cop jumped behind a moving car, the car was stopped at the time), I think they're definitely to blame for handling the situation the way they did. There is absolutely no possible way for him to see their tiny badges behind big guns while looking in the mirror at them. And I can only imagine, that if this was not a pastor and a very christian family, the resentment for cops that his unborn child would grow up with.

    Fair enough sir...

I just see this as a senseless killing over drugs/prostitution.

Say the police officer died from being run over...Would drugs/prostitution be worth jumping in front of a car?

Edit: Actually, the more I think about it, that car must not have been a serious threat to him (going to slow) or he wouldn't have jumped out in front of it.

I'm going to agree with others in this thread...That was murder.

While I find sympathy for any child or wife that has to go on with their life without a father or a husband...I have no special sympathy for pastors or Christian families...just because they profess to be such.

It will be interesting to see why a pastor had an alleged prostitute and drug dealer in his vehicle. Not that that act in itself is a reason to die...but it will be interesting.
