It's not so much a safety issue. It's a social conflict issue," said Frank Jenks, a natural resource specialist with Interior's Bureau of Land Management, which oversees 245 million acres. He adds that urbanites "freak out" when they hear shooting on public lands.

Really? So rather than teach them that it's okay, we're just going to ban the shooters. Makes perfect sense.

So? I "freak out" when urbanites get their panties in a bunch. Can we ban them?

Is that the best excuse they can find?

Why not just designate some areas as "Unsafe for walking your toy poodle"? Better yet, get the Federal Government out of the land ownership business.

I say we create 5'x5' "Free Freak-out Zones" way in the back of the park, away from everyone else. We can put it right next to the "Free Speech Zones".

So, do you support public golf courses, atv parks, etc? Why Doug your fellow citizens owe you or anyone a place to shoot?

Right here is the whole problem.

"Interior's Bureau of Land Management, which oversees 245 million acres."

I wonder how many private gun ranges would open up if they didn't have to compete with "free" or low priced public ranges.

I have a problem with the reasoning behind the changes. The article cites social conflict between "urbanites" and shooters. Seems unfair that the urbanites "sense of security" should come at the expense of shooters.

Probably zero. Have you ever looked in to what it takes to open a new club. Starting with the pesky EPA and issues of lead.

Most existing clubs are saved by legislation grandfathering them and protecting them from lawsuits. Going from 100 million to almost 400 million people has changed things dramatically. Many clubs are gone.

You have to neuter or eliminate many agencies to reverse that trend.

So socialism is the answer to gun ranges?

Did you read the part where the federal government controls 245 f'n million acres of land? If that acreage returned to private ownership, land values would drop and more people can afford to shoot on their own property.

But why should I pay the real cost of enjoying my hobbies if I can use the government gun to make everyone else pay for it?

You asked how many clubs would open up. The answer is none will get approved.

I know all about shooting on private land and I have worked in and been a member of many private clubs. When is the last time you saw a new club open up in a new location? It won't matter who owns the land, clubs are not easy to open in todays world.

And I didn't say existing public clubs, ranges or Socialism. When I say club I mean PRIVATE AND PAID FOR by the members. Govt does not run clubs, they run ranges. Apparently you have never seen the legal actions taken against private clubs on private lands that were there long before rich urbanites built their homes down range? Many have lost, been closed down, some now face many restricitons on times and what can be shot. Study up on clubs within the 8 counties surrounding Indy.

The guys who founded Blackwater did it by buying 6000 acres in a swamp.

And I have a 440 yard range on my 27 acres. Instead of buying that land, I should have demanded the government build a public range closer to my house. They're all an hour plus away.

Why do you cross private land use by an individual with opening a private members only club? They are two different things. Opening a club that will possibly have gun fire 7 days a week, day and night and send more lead down range then you and your family ever will is not on the same radar. Very hard to get approved. I am not saying the Govt should run ranges, you asked how many new clubs will open. They will continue to cock block that like they do now. BLM or no BLM.

By the way, don't assume that your private use on your small 27 acres is safe in the long run. If your land affects runoff and there is an endangerded toad nearby your land use could be restricted. If a developer buys 100 acres down range from you, builds 100 homes, you are on peoples radar every time you pull the trigger. Same way people build then complain about the smell of the 3 generations old hog farm up wind from them.

Personally - I freak out a little when I hear gunshots in the Urbanites neighborhood...

They need to learn that guns actually have other uses.

So, do you support public golf courses, atv parks, etc? Why Doug your fellow citizens owe you or anyone a place to shoot?

    Nobody owes me anything.

I have taken it upon myself to purchase my own little 14 acre plot of land, that my wife and I have worked hard for many years to pay for. It is our own land that we use for our own shooting range, and we as owners, invite whomever we wish (or not) to enjoy it with us, because we own it, we payed for it, it is ours.

However, "public land" is just that, owned by the public. It is only "managed" by the government, not owned.

My reasoning for posting this is merely to point out the obvious, government is once again telling us, we the people, what we can or can not do on our own land, land that they merely manage for us, we the owners, the people.

It is nothing new, it is just simply aimed at gun owners this time.

    That is all.

Ah, but we have been told there are no worries keeping Obama as long as there is gridlock. So none of this can be happening.
