If they'd bored a hole into the tree 3-4" diameter 12-18" deep and set their charge they could have done a lot more damage with a lot less powder.

yeah, you must tamp the charge to get the most from it. A blast goes to the least resistance so if you want to get all you can from a charge, tamp.
