NWI/Dunes area... Looking for a fun downtown

Hey all, i'm usually just passing through on 49 and 94 when I'm in NWI, but Monday plan to take the family to the dunes for the first time (wife, two young girls) We love the small towns along the coast in Michigan because of the cool downtowns with ice cream shops, toy stores, window shopping... stuff like that. Anything like that in Michigan City? Chesterton? Any good hole in the wall restaurants? Anything truly authentic mexican?
