Mystery Hole

My son and I were out on his property yesterday and saw this big hole in side of a tree up about 10 feet. Not like anything I've ever seen. Wondering what animal or bird? Could be manmade but no sign of foot prints and cuttings/shavings on ground all around tree. Any ideas. I'm thinking Chupacabra nest.

This exactly. They cut a rectangular hole for nesting.

Doggy got it. If you'd been around when he was making that hole you'd have thought somebody was using an axe really fast. They make the chips fly!

I looked it up. That is a big bird, and it states it makes the rectangular holes.
I can call it a day now, I learned something new.

I have a handful that inhabit the trees around where I live. Love looking at them and listening to them work….

We had them in upper michigan by traverse city , they pecked on my garage , was going to blast it , and told my neighbor and he said the so and sos were protected species , didnt care and he wont be back , something got em , dont know who.
