My bike has become a low mileage machine, logging only about 6K miles in the last 5 years. It wears Michelin Commander II tires that were installed 5 years ago. I am wondering how many years you can run on a tire before it should be replaced, even if it still has acceptable tread depth.

    Any opinions on this?

Probably a bit of apples to oranges, but I had a friend whose family owned a large trailer manufacturing business and they recommended replacing trailer tires 5 years from the born on date.
The results of a quick Google search of "motorcycle tire lifespan" seemed to follow along that same line of thinking ...around 5 years.

First the Commander II is an excellent tire. As long as there is no cracking and they have held their shape I think you should be good for general short cruising. Longer road trips is not worth the risk. First signs of cracking and I'd replace them.

More important than how long they have been on the bike is the date code on the tire...

We're expecting a sizeable profit sharing bonus at work this quarter and I SHOULD drop it all as a principal payment on my mortgage but I'm gonna be very tempted to buy an Africa Twin if I can find one.

Like this one? My 2021 Adventure Sports ES DCT, got it on June 15. 3,000 fantastic miles so far and loving it.

Second what t-squared said. Additionally, you can contact the tire manufacturer and get their recommendation. For Michelin, https://www.michelinman.com/assistance has links to motorcycle tires. When I had questions about Avon Cobra's they put me in touch with a rep who was able to address them. Ultimately you'll have to decide what is acceptable to you.

Well, today my brother took delivery of his new 2022 Ducati Monster. About 350 lbs with 111HP and tons of torque. I rode a long wheelie in first and second just snapping the throttle. My Harley is probably going to way of the dodo next year after my upcoming neck surgery.

    I did about 4000 in a week, I couldn’t imagine almost 3000miles in 32 hours.

Took advantage of the 50 degree day yesterday. A little windy but had a good ride. Then topped off the tank and put a good dose of seafoam in the fuel, changed the oil, detailed her, plugged in the battery tender and covered her up.
