Have any of you used an aftermarket safety on a mossberg 500/590/590A1? If so what brand did you chose and how did you like it?

The reason I ask is because back in the day I had a 590A1 where I put one on from Brownells: https://www.brownells.com/gun-parts...ty-parts/mossberg-500590835930935-safety-kit/. I ended up selling that particular shotgun, and years later replaced it with a different model. Now.... I've been practicing with the new shotgun that has the factory safety and even as aggressive as it is my thumb glides over the top of it and I wouldn't mind an aftermarket safety. Ideally, I'd buy another brownells safety, but they've been out of stock for forever. Anyone know of a quality alternative to the brownells option?

Sometimes you just got to leap!

All kidding aside, this is a pretty simple part. Pick a steel one and go with it. Not a huge amount of money and you can probably return it if you do not like it.

I have had good luck with NDZ as they are a reputable company out of CT. ProMag is also a reputable online seller and if they are carrying it, it is probably a decent part.

No idea on quality, but here are some options:

    Amazon product ASIN B0B13BK5JZ

    I bought one. Its nice.

Just be careful removing the old one. There is a spring and bearing that engages a detent. I forgot about that and spent 20 minutes looking for them.

Instead of supporting the evil empire, you could get one from Vang.

That's part of why I wanted to pay $40 for one from Brownells instead of $20 for a chineese knock off on amazon. Vang Comp makes great things from what I've heard, but I prefer the brownells design.

I put an NDZ on my little 20 gauge and it’s awesome.
    Very good quality, perfect fit.
    Made in USA.

I bought a red anodized one, just like the Amazon part, for $7 on Ebay.
No problems with it whatsoever, and the raised ridge makes for very positive activation.

I've bought 3 cheap metal ones from eBay over the years. They were all a slightly different design, but they have all worked just fine.

I didn't even know these were a thing.
Why would one need an aftermarket safety for a Mossberg shotgun anyway?
I've never heard of anyone removing the factory safety.

The factory ones work fine but are slim and grooves are shallow and thin. The Vang Comp safety is more of a tactical modification. They widened the overall safety to about the full width of the thumb as well as raised and thickened the grooves. In my opinion, the Vang Comp safety makes sense bc in high stress situations we tend to lose our fine motor skills(slim, shallow, and thin) and use our gross motor skills(widened, raised, thickened). Also, in my opinion, most home defense situations occur in low to no light conditions. In those conditions it easier to locate/engage widened, raised, and thickened rather than slim, shallow, and thin.

I guess to each, their own...
I grew up on the Mossberg 500.
It was the first, and only shotgun I had bought or owned until I was in my 30's.
I now have more shotguns, but the 500 is always my go-to scatter gun.
It's what I'm used to. I don't even need to think about it.
It's muscle memory at this point.

I've never had a problem finding or activating the 500 safety.
It's actually the reason I chose the 500 over the Remington 870.
I've always thought the tang safety was the most logical and ergonomically correct position for a quick acting safety.

I agree with you!! And I can see where changing to an "enhanced safety," so to speak, would

I agree with you!! And it sounds like you know your stuff and are gonna be just fine without any other safety! I too favor the mossberg!
