Had a strange one come up the other day.

So, for years, School Boards have had the legal authority to "authorize" someone to carry a firearm.
    1. A person who may legally possess a firearm and who has been authorized by:
      1. a school board (as defined by IC 20-26-9-4); or
      2. the body that administers a charter school established under IC 20-24; to carry a firearm in or on school property.
So, let's say they authorize someone to carry on a fields trip. Should cover the bus ride, and should cover the "school function" (honestly can't remember if that is a thing still - might have already been struck from IC).

But, what happens if that "function" is at another school? Need authorization from BOTH boards? IC doesn't say anything about WHERE, just that one would need authorization from "a school board".

Found that... odd. And worth discussion?

i'd think that the approving-schools jurisdiction, and thus approval to carry, would end once you step off their property

they can't approve you to do something where they have no jurisdiction over, y'know? interesting discussion though.

Agreed. Once you step off the bus, you're on another board's jurisdiction. Just like if the field trip was to the statehouse. You have the school's permission, but that doesnt mean squat once you step out of the bus and onto statehouse property.

    So... hypothetically

Schools that hire armed security, that are not also (legal) School Resource Officers, and then send those armed security into another GFZ (e.g.: another school), are asking said security to commit a felony?

It would require authorization by both school boards. As noted in #2 and #3, one jurisdiction cannot decide for another. Anyone acting as security would be wise to verify with both jurisdictions that they are authorized to carry as security.
