As mentioned in other posts I recently acquired a couple of less than costly firearms that I really hadn’t planned on purchasing.
Instead of taking an optic off of one to put it on another, I went to good ol’ Amazon to see what I could get next day since I and planned to go shooting the following.
I found a Monstrum Blackbird prism for sub $100.
Now I know the saying, you get what you pay for or buy a cheap gun so you can afford an expensive optic…
I did buy a 3-9x for a Savage Axis I acquired. And have had zero issues. I’m starting to think they are decent optics for a started optic or maybe limited use since I have don’t any torture tests. There have been some interesting reviews on the tube.
This thing seemed clear, and crisp. Has a circle w/ 2 MOA dot. Fit and finish is nice, seems well built.
I fired several hundred rounds through the AKM with it and after realizing the mount wasn’t completely tight with the side rail retained zero. Or at least I didn’t notice any change. I didn’t do any serious “drop” tests, but I did smack the butt on the table (think resetting an over/under) but quite a bit harder. Reloaded and shot. Devoured my professional quality dessert size paper plate targets at roughly 50 and then 100 yards. I’m likely to pick up a Primary Arms or Vortex in the future, but if it stays consistent I might just leave it on this firearm since it’s just a range toy.
Any one have any experience with these? I have been on a “budget find” kick and trying not to do the “honey it was real cheap” and then proceed to dump the equal amount or more into it for optics furniture etc. Once again…this is not for competitive shooting, just range fun.

It sounds like you're trying really hard to convince yourself that they're worth it. :)

If it's just for range fun, no need to try to convince yourself. I own 2 monstrum optics, both purchased for less that $100. They both had loose screws from the factory where the mounting plate attaches to the optic, but with those tightened and loctite applied they've held zero for me at the range so far. I wouldn't trust them for any serious or rugged use, but if you want something to throw on a backup gun or to use for plinking on a just for fun gun, or while you decide what to get in the long term, yeah, I'd say they're fine.

You are partially correct. Just seeking out others opinions or experiences. I bought them after watching a lot of reviews.

Kid had one (LVPO, not prism) on his rifle in the youth program I help with. Ran out of adjustment before it zeroed. Bigger problem was it ran out of adjustment, the nut just ran off the threads, wouldn't come back. optic's scrap now. Also didn't really focus at any distance.
