Does anybody have any idea what the different color codes mean on the M&P recoil springs? I have two springs one is coded light blue and the other black. Both came from 9mm.

Only two things I can think of:

    one is aftermarket

    or

perhaps one came from a very recently produced m&p, or a very early m&p (hinting towards a color code change?)

you might want to check out one of the m&p forums

M&P recoil springs are painted for two reasons and are part of a "lean" manufacturing system.

    1. The paint identifies which type of pistol it is to be installed.
    2. The paint identifies the orientation of the spring within the pistol

The long and the short of it is that it saves time during manufacturing.

All I know personally is that my 9c's spring has a yellow end... And the yellow side is the "front".

Thanks for the input guys. My M&P standard has the blue spring and the black spring is in the spec-ops model that now has a standard barrel in it. I thought the spec-ops might have a different spring because of the heavier barrel. I the automotive industry the color coded springs idenify different spring rates. I tried to call S&W to see if i need to switch to the blue spring but they are closed until after the first of the year. If I get anymore info i will post.

I bet the black spring is only color coded as black because it's going into the spec ops. I bet they have the same push/pull weight.

I called Smith&Wesson today they said the spec-ops model was good to go with the black coded recoil spring even with the change to a standard barrel.
