Anybody watch this? I'd seen the commercials but hadn't watched it. Have it on now. These guys are brutal! Real armor, "real" weapons (although with blunted edges) and they basically just wail on each other. They start out with a "melee round" where 6 fighters are all fighting, each man for himself. They're getting ready to start a "team melee" now. The judges pair up fighters in teams. The theme for the team melee is "Viking and Byzantine", with period correct armor and weaponry. Pretty neat!

Son and I watched it the other knight. Was pretty insane.

At first I thought it would be fun to do, then suddenly realized I value my well being too much.

New episode is on tonight at 10 fyi.

One of the contestants I saw yesterday was an MMA fighter that had never even put on armor before the day of the competition. He was eliminated in the first melee round. Turns out punching with steel gauntlets and "gloves" isn't the same as bare-fisted, especially when your opponents are covered with armor. He didn't really have much luck using his weapon (short axe I think) either.

    Could be anywhere
Years ago when I was stationed at Griffiss AFB in upstate NY we used to host Barbarian Parties. The invitations said "Show up in armor or be a soft squishy target". We had it on a farm of a couple hundred acres by a pond. Had huge bonfires, many kegs of beer and random sword and axe fights. It was great fun. Our largest one had over a hundred folks and we ran out of beer after 8 kegs. Even with the non-combatants that was a heck of a melee. I'm surprised looking back on it that no one drowned or died...or got arrested. I have the broadsword I used (gift from wife) sitting here on my desk.
