I never understood the appeal of a .40. It`s no better ballistically than a .45 and no less recoil...
I bought into the 40 lie back in the early 90s for my first carry pistol. It was "A flatter shooting 45 with marginally better stopping power." (60ft lbs?) Yeah, I know, 60 isnt a whole lot. But I was young and dumb. :):

Its essentially the same gun, just not as sexy as what they put out in .45.

Edit: same gun with a WHOLLY different recoil impulse. After owning a 1911, I'll take fat and slow over a 40 any day of the week.

After reading some of the replies I wonder what is the best way to counter a challenge ( I really don’t care for the term impaired) some things you have control over to some degree, physical fitness, with in reason. But how can you best make up for deficits in other areas?
To quote Bob Newhart. "Stop it."

OWN the term. What's the first step in a 12 step program? Owning the problem! So you are impaired. So what? Calling it something else wont make you any less impaired. Once you vocalize the term and accept it, you can begin to move past it and do what you can to improve yourself and be less impaired.

Now get out there and use the tools to overcome that impairment.

That is it right there not really sure how to develop some means of compensation to counter it.

Not picking on you. So Camera Monkey is at his local camera store looking for his favorite brand of black and white film for his trusty 35 mm SLR, well they only have Polaroid film that day in a society where instant gratification is king people do not have time to wait for chemical processing and printing, let alone dry time. So Camera Monkey speeds off in his 1982 Ford Escort at a High Rate of Speed destination, the World of Wally.

Upon arrival he dashes to the Photography isle where he locates the elusive Kodak Black and White film . All is right with the world. Camera Monkey while not affiliated with the World of Wally traverses past the expansive bank of Self check outs to Isle 99 in which a relic of the past is present, a live cashier although there are 10 people in front of the the Camera Monkey he stands on his principles and refuses to use the self check out.

Then about twenty one feet back a group of Bobbie Sanders supporters mostly peaceful decide to start causing a scene in The World of Wally in protest of the $50.00 an hour wage the casher works for.

Violence is rearing its ugly head as Karen makes here way forward out of you line of sight, attacking patrons. You can not hear any of this so how do you compensate for this? A lot of other people have heard the disturbance and have exited the store using the doors at the other end of the store so you had no idea there was a mass exit from the store.

My point was mostly about the softening of language to make everyone feel better about themselves. My angle comes from the classic George Carlin bit about maybe if we didnt soften the language, those that needed the help might have gotten it because the old words sounded so much more raw.

And I drive a 1985 Toyota Celica, thankyouverymuch. you think I'm a loser? Pfffff!

I don't remember that and I was around when major police departments were transitioning from revolvers to semi-autos. I remember the thinking back then was to have a round more potent than the 9mm, but that would fit the same size frame, so officers of a smaller stature could handle the weapon effectively. 9mm ammo wasn't as highly developed as it is today. The recent rush to 9mm pistols is because, in general, officers score better with that caliber as opposed to the heavier recoiling .40 S&W. Traditionally, many civilians follow the trends of the police and military when selecting guns and calibers. It makes sense, since a lot of thought and testing goes into the selection process.

i've been a fan of the .40 for quite a while. nice intermediate choice between the wieght if a .45 and energy of a 9mm.

i look at it as different tools for different jobs.

i also carry a 9mm. soon to start carrying .45.

clearly my attempt to inject a bit of humor has failed epically.

if you are still driving a 1985 Toyota I would say you made a wise investment and Have done a good job maintaining it. No sarcasm intended.

    .
I think I have my wife talked into moving to the country when I retire. She never wanted to because I have travelled extensively and she felt more comfortable with close by neighbors. I get that. But when I retire, I'll be home!

The gardener used to think much the same when we lived in the burbs, then one night two houses down the street there was a home invasion, wife beaten, husband shot and left for dead by three thugs. I happens anywhere.
