As someone who grew up in a pretty liberal family (liberal arts college faculty), I can attest to the hermetically-sealed world view most contemporary liberals have, and the assurance that their's is the only moral position (although not grounded in morals in any meaningful way).

I will say that my parents did not like the Clintons or Jimmy Carter. They didn't live to see Obama. I'm pretty sure he would have infuriated them both.


Many liberals aren't drinking the Kool-Aid, but by the same token they're not ready to find common ground with Ted Cruz (or say so publicly at any rate). See what 2016 augurs, you may be surprised yet.

For sure. My wife gets on me for getting into political discussions with liberals. My rule on that is I say nothing but if they start it's game on. They usually start.

Yes liberals are a low lot. Many are very hypocritical. The worst are often the white liberals. While sending their kids to private schools and living in the best gated communities they want to force failed social engineering policies on the rest of us and deny the most basic freedom of association with whom we choose.

Don't be silly. We have plenty of public examples examples of just that sort of liberal and just that sort of hypocrisy, from college professors and political leaders to celebrities. And as for the "rank-and-file," I've had enough discussions with liberal relatives and acquaintances to understand that they base their beliefs on emotional arguments and blind political loyalties rather than reasoned arguments.

The problem with liberals (current understanding of the word not classic) is that they feel their ideology entitles them to steal their neighbors income to spend as they want. And they will use the power of government to steal it.

Hate probably is not the right word...disdain, disgust, exasperation. It's often best to just turn the channel or walk away before they can generate anger with their self satisfied smugness as they advocate doing 'good works' and offering 'helping hands' as they look at other peoples wallets.

I've gone by the philosophy that I'll put my life on the line to protect your right to hold an opinion, but may very well put it on the line the next day to prevent that opinion being implemented as policy. When I'm faced with someone trying to take what's mine, force me to not just accept but adopt their opinion, tell me what words I can say, and especially to disarm me and turn me into a slave, I don't think hate is too strong a word to apply to it.

Generally speaking, true liberals are more akin to libertarians, though they do believe in national borders unlike many modern libertarians.

The founders were liberals. The conservatives wanted to stay subjects of the King.

Most people tend to forget that we are politically backward here in the United States.

Our nation was founded on Classical Liberalism (with the word Liberal itself stemming from the Latin word for liberty). Thomas Jefferson formulated his philosophy of governance off of the notions presented by John Locke, in so much as he opposed the formation of an overly powerful central government, which would likely abuse its people, as all other similar governments have in the past. This was truly a 'Progressive' idea at the time, as it had never been tried before. Giving the power to the people, so they may determine their own destiny, and defend themselves from any abusers, is central to the original American political philosophy.

Classical Conservatives favored the maintenance of a strong government, which could exercise its power over the people "for the greater good". The role of a Conservative government was clear - to do whatever is necessary to maintain order and stability (Utility) without regard to individual freedom or happiness (Liberty).

Calling Liberals Conservatives, and likewise calling Conservatives Liberals, frankly makes my head spin. I would liken the practice to 'Doublespeak' in George Orwell's book 1984. It is just absurd.
