Ordered the hornady manual a week ago but it hasn't shown up. But my bullets have so i hope someone will help. I'm loading for 358 win with the 200gn ftx. Hoping to get min and max for varget, imr4064 and h4895. Also the overall length for seating the bullet. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

I've searched hodgons site, they show the spire point but not the ftx. I have read the bearing surface is different. I'm new to reloading so I am trying to play it safe. Thanks for the help biggen. I was hoping someone might look in the hornady book for me so I can try them out this weekend.

WARNING: The following information is not from a published reliable source. Hand loading ammunition can be dangerous and any person undertaking the activity assumes full responsibility for the results. Neither I nor ingunowners.com claim any fitness of the following information for any purpose whatsoever.

The 200gr FTX is about 0.10" longer below the cannelure than the 200gr SP listed in the Hodgdon data.

You might want to seat the bullet and leave [STRIKE]0.10" from the case mouth to the bottom of the cannelure (or 0.10" longer than the Hodgdon data, whichever is longer)[/STRIKE] to have the same amount of powder space, and see if this will feed from your magazine.

ETA: check that... just took some more measurements... the SP is ~1.040" long (tips vary) and the FTX is 1.090" to 1.100". The SP is slighlty longer than the FTX from cannelure to tip, around 0.070" to 0.80" so for the same powder space you will want to be ~0.050" maybe 0.060" longer than listed COL.
Bearing surface between the two bullets is nearly identical as far as I can tell.

However, assuming that you will be trimming your brass to 1.8" or slightly less to be Indiana legal, that's out the window, and I would recommend a COL of no longer than 2.680" A typical COL for the .308 family is 2.800" but...

The FTX is ~1.090" long and has a flat base with a bit of the bevel. This bevel will have to be all the way past the neck, or you won't have much neck tension; you only have 0.150" max of neck left and you have to use all of it. I used a measurement of 1.030" plus the .358 Win shoulder dimension of 1.650" to get 2.680". That ensures that the bevel is seated completely past the neck.

IME, use the H4895; the 4064 and Varget are going to be too slow for best performance. Also, H4895 is a better powder to start low with anyway since this is what Hodgdon uses for its youth loads, and...

...since the length of the 200gr FTX is ~0.10" longer below the cannelure than the 200gr SP, I would reduce the Hodgdon start load and go ~15% below max load and start at 41.0 grains. Two reasons, 1) it's a longer bullet and 2) the max load is compressed. Also Hodgdon list the max at 48.0 compressed, but since you have a longer bullet I would stop at 45.5 or 46.0gr. Work up carefully, pay particular attention to how hard the bolt is to lift, and if you have one, keep tabs on the case head dimension with a 0.0001" micrometer. If the dimension changes, stop adding powder.

Also, clean the chamber thoroughly before using standard length ammunition.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you have been down this road before. I trimmed some brass to 1.8 last night so you are right about that. Thanks for the help. Have you tried shooting 358 win trimmed down?

    .358 Winchester with 200 gr FTX shows H4895 min=41.9, Max=48.7
    .358 Winchester with 200 gr FTX shows IMR 4064 min=42.9, Max=48.5

Cartridge overall length with this bullet = 2.630"

I never loaded for this cartridge, but I copied this from the 8th edition Hornady manual
They do not list a Varget load
    good luck

Good luck with your deer loads. I have a great 1.8" 35 rem with the 200 grain ftx. 2150 fps and accurate. I'm ready for deer season.

9th edition doesn't have a varget load either

In a 1.8" case my marlin 336 35 rem likes a 200 grain ftx over a near max load of leverevolution powder it cruises around 2150 fps.

Loaded all at hornadys 2.63" this put the base of the bullet about half way down the shoulder.
Trimmed to 1.8, 44 gn of 4064 the two in the black are 158 jhp I sighted in with, shot a couple since barrel was clean. They shoot pretty good for first load I ever reloaded.

I've got a 8 month old at home. I'm excited to get her out shooting with me someday!

Nice shooting. What was the range and do you have a chrono? 44 and 44.5 looked the best. Iron sights or scope?

Thanks for the compliment kludge. 100 yards and I wish I had a chronograph. It would be nice to know what I'm getting out of them with a 24" barrel. Just put a new nikon scope warne rings and egw picatinny rail. Will be cool to see how the bdc reticle works out.

Kludge you were right on the money with the 2.68 length being as far out as you could go. I seated one a little at a time while holding a bullet on the outside. Kept seating it deeper till the cannelures lined up, measured right at 2.68.

Did a little more shooting with the 1.8 trimmed brass.

Hole on the left is the first 2 shots, thought I was gonna put all three in the same .358 hole, it was not ment to be.

should do for deer, only other powder I have is varget and the velocity it seems should be similar and I don't know how accuracy could improve. Maybe I'll run across some ramshot tac before deer season.

Good luck finding TAC! I had to search daily several websites for about a month before I found some Exterminator. GunBroker has TAC at 3x-5x usual price if you really, really want TAC.

What velocities are you getting with the 4064?

I don't have a chronograph so I don't know about the speed with 4064, got a friend with one so hopefully I'll find out in a couple weeks. I was at a local gun store and was asking if they ever got tac in. He said no but the only other guy in the shop that was just in shooting the bull said he had some he sale just help me out. Sold me 2 pounds and 1000 small rifle primers at a super fair price. Now just looking for some magnum primers.
