Hello fellow Hoosiers.
This seemed like an appropriate place to be as I've lived in Indiana a few years and recently acquired my first firearm, an XDM 9mm 4.5" barrel. Intended use: home defense and the fun of range time.
I'm actually into anything mechanical (mainly cars, motorcycles, and the like) so guns are right along that same vein. My only prior experience is .22, 12ga, and a muzzle loader all via Boy Scouts. My wife has none (both of us are from liberal families regarding guns) but has acceptance from a vehicular break in in our driveway this summer. Now it's just a matter of getting her acclimated... slowly and carefully.
Planning on us both doing a basic class (from Accuracy Unlimited in North Vernon once the new building is open. It's <30 minutes away, it's indoors, it's where we got the XDM) with her renting a .22 pistol or something. Plans after that depend on how she responds.
