Drones were launched that dropped bombs on the Israeli military outposts along the border fence, immediately neutralizing the ground level chain of command along Gaza. Thus, there was no one left to report to the higher levels of leadership what was taking place. At the same time, rockets began to fire from Gaza into Israel, first hundreds, then thousands. The firing of rockets was not unusual. What was atypical was the huge number of missiles that made it past the Iron Dome defense system.

All this was taking place to mask the third prong of attack, one that has never before occurred from Gaza. The border fence was breached and, in places, completely torn down. More than a thousand terrorists began pouring through the holes, some in cars and trucks, many on motorcycles. They came to hunt Jews.

One of the first groups they found were the young people at the rave. The terrorists surrounded the partygoers and opened fire. More than 260 were slaughtered. Others were rounded up and taken back into Gaza as hostages. Meanwhile, in the towns and kibbutzim along the border, families were waking up to pounding on their doors. When they answered, they were murdered in cold blood. Once again, many others were kidnapped back across the border.

Once the gunfire began, the first responders were police, firefighters, and EMTs. Many of them were killed as they tried to defend the innocent civilians. Where was the military response? First, as we saw earlier, the border echelon of communication was severed. Second, when rockets were fired in the past, it was often a ruse to mask terrorists attempted to cross into Israel from Lebanon in the north. Thus, many of the special military units were heading in the wrong direction.

It took four hours for the military to mount a concerted response, which was eventually dubbed Operation Iron Sword. By that time, the carnage was devastating. Bodies of Jewish civilians littered the streets. A still unknown number were kidnapped and taken hostage into Gaza. Women, children, the elderly, no one was spared the violence of these Palestinian criminals. Not since the Holocaust have we seen so many Jews rounded up, beaten, and humiliated in public. And never before has it happened within the borders of modern Israel. Eventually, once the tide of battle had turned, the terrorists fled back into Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) followed them in. Hamas members, from the top leaders down to the soldiers, were targeted, as were their headquarters, warehouses, and homes. This is all part of a three-level response by the Israeli military. The first level is to purify Israel of all terrorists. Anyone who crossed the border as part of this attack and is still in Israel needs to either be arrested or killed. The second level is to take from Hamas and other terrorist organizations that threaten Israel all their military capabilities. To accomplish this, Israel’s government has invoked Article 40 of the Basic Laws, which amounts to a declaration of war. Last time Article 40 was used was in 1973 for the Yom Kippur War. This will allow the IDF to use all air, ground, and naval forces to accomplish this feat.

The third level of Israel’s response is to hold accountable the countries that assisted Hamas in this attack. Hamas is neither equipped nor sophisticated enough to have pulled this off alone. Most automatically look to Iran, but U.S. intelligence says the ayatollahs were not involved. The question we have to ask is who has jamming equipment advanced enough to nullify the protection of the Iron Dome?

My understanding is The Dome was just overloaded with the amount of rockets that were incoming.

Why do we have to take sides in every damn war on Earth? Let the idiots who want to fight fight. If people here want to send money, go there to fight, get online to support/criticize, so be it! First Amendment covers that.

Our border is as porous as edible underwear, but we send a carrier group to help every country we morally or emotionally "owe" something to. Tired of it.

This is the "men in charge" upping the ante because the tide of support for Ukraine has faded. "We can't turn our back on our greatest ally!" is now the call. Nuts.

Every people/nation has a right to defend itself. Doesn't mean we have to join in with cash and munitions. If so, let's sell to both and cash in.

I'm sure we'll be told soon enough.
Remember Amir is a Major in the IDF reserves. So I imagine he knows what's going on.
Its been reported thats what happened.

McCarthy said the incoming missiles have overwhelmed Israel’s praised defense system, the Iron Dome. The Iron Dome is a missile defense system that can intercept short-range rockets in the air but it has to be reloaded to continuously intercept the incoming missiles.

“You’ve got to understand, 5,000 missiles … are overwhelming the Iron Dome. The Iron Dome cannot take so many,” McCarthy said.

    What Happened This Time?

The near-perfect air defence system found itself overpowered after a barrage of rockets from Hamas. For several years, the terrorist group, Hamas, has been trying to find a weakness in the Iron Dome system. They have been largely successful in doing so by overwhelming the system with a Salvo rocket attack (multiple rockets launched in a short span of time), making it difficult for the control system to intercept all targets. This time, over 5,000 rockets were launched in just 20 minutes.

    So...

Yesterday I took my dad to the Kendalville Apple Festival. Missed all the news until today.

I've heard some call this a massive intelligence failure. Mossad is supposed to be really good in their area. They probably are. My guess is that Hamas simply went olde school - dudes on bikes with letters. All the spy technology in the world won't catch that unless you've got a man on the inside.

It sounds like the iron dome was about as effective as the Maginot Line. As unsinkable as the Titanic. Fact is, every defense has a weak spot. Somewhere. Just ask the Death Star.

Hamas exploited the greatest advantage in war bar none - surprise. Look at Pearl Harbor. Look at 9/11. You don't have to be strong to knock someone into the dirt, you just have to bushwhack 'em. Doesn't mean they won't get up, p****d off, but they will go into the dirt.

I predict that Israel will respond with extreme force. They already are. I've read they're bombing Hamas commanders. I expect, in truth, that they're bombing where Hamas commanders were. I expect they are long gone. I also predict that Israel will send troops into Gaza. When they do (not if) they will get a seriously bloody nose there. I think they'll win, but they will get hurt. That is urban warfare. Urban warfare into an area with lots of AK-47s. Lots of RPGs. Look at the fighting Russia and Ukraine did in Bakhmut. Better yet, look at Stalingrad. Urban warfare is bloody as hell on both sides. Israeli tanks will not be nearly as helpful there as they'll want them to be.

Leftygunner was correct on Israel not being a unified society. There have been many reservists that have said they will refuse the call up IF the Netenyahu's attacks on the courts don't stop. My understanding is that Netenyahu is corrupt as hell and is trying to defang the courts before they can convict him. There may well be other reasons some might not like the courts but that does not alter the fact that Netenyahu might spend time in prison if convicted.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/03/09/israel-protests-judicial-reform-military/

According to the Guardian only three (3) out of forty (40) reserve pilots showed up for training exercises. To quote, "In an announcement on Sunday, all but three of the 40 reservist pilots in Israel’s elite 69 Squadron said they would not take part in a training exercise later this week, and instead participate in widespread public protests, claiming they were not prepared to serve a “dictatorial regime”."

These reservists are Israeli military. They aren't liberals in any sense of what we think of. These are patriotic Israeli's saying and showing that there is a problem inside Israel.

My belief is that most of the Middle Eastern problems were not started by the usual suspect, the United States, but rather by Great Britain! All of my thinking goes into their massive failure to understand the territory they oversaw in the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. It's been a cluster***k ever since.

The United States does come in second to Great Britain in how we handled things with the formation of Israel post WWII. We did not exactly show the Wisdom of Solomon there.

I've been reading Peter Zeihan's book The End of the World is Just the Beginning. He talks about the military withdrawal of the United States from around the world. As we do so the various Hatfields and McCoys around the world are going to realize the former sheriff is retired onto his farm in the American midwest and there is nothing stopping them from restarting various and sundry rivalries that have been kept below a boil. Just two (2) weeks ago Azerbaijan took all of its territory back from Armenia is surprise attack. They were able to do it because in that case Russia (which supported(?) Armenia) was distracted.

This is our world for the next 20 years folks. We don' need Middle Eastern oil or gas thanks to our massive shale deposits, so we don't care much any more about the Middle East. We can feed ourselves. Our largest trading partner today is Mexico with shorter and more secure trade routes, not including cheaper labor costs than China.

Clinton didn't care about foreign policy. Bush Jr. only focused on the Middle East due to 9/11. The rest of the world he didn't care about. Obama did nothing in foreign policy. Trump stayed out of it. Except for Ukraine Biden has stayed pretty much at home. It isn't a party, it's an American shift in mindset. We don't want to be the worlds sheriff anymore and we haven't since Clinton.

The world is going back to what it was before WWII and the American over-watch. I'm glad I live where I do.

    Regards,

    Doug
