I'm hearing all kinds of great stuff about the Egyptian Democratic revolution.

Apparently, women now have the same rights as men, and information is freely flowing through the country. All kinds of tolerance, it's an amazing renaisance time...

I remember lots of media coverage about how great this was when it was happening, but where is Aderson Cooper now?

If you are relying on the "media" for your news, then you likely know more about Dancing with the Stars. If it isn't selling ad space, it isn't news.

    Here is what Google finds:

Looks like the Egyptian military is running the show, and is scheduling new elections at the end of 2011. Soccer matches have resumed, so things must be looking up! Lots of talk about resuming relations with Iran, though.

Afghanistan also had soccer matches when being run by the Taliban. They usually kicked them off by playing the national anthem and publically executing a couple people. It's good times.

I find it ironic most people see these acts as "barbaric" although one of the greatest civilizations ( ROME ) in history did this for sheer entertainment.

    :dunno:

Great? I dunno about that. The buildings were great, but that's about where it ends. The slavery, buggery, torture, genocide, tyranny, etc weren't so great.

The empire was large because it conquered a lot of people, not because there were people lining up to be part of empire.

They were prosperous because of all of those things, yes; although people flock to places that have work and higher standard of living. Architectural marvels, powerful military // navy.

There is a reason why Rome ( the center of the world ).

Same thing here, USA has been the "rome" for some time, always on a conquest and most of the people here could care less.

Sorry didn't mean to thread jack buddy.

    *BACK ON TOPIC*

I haven't been following the Egyptian situation but... do we know who these new democratic leaders are? Wonder if they were people who will keep foreign interests in tact rather than the people ( kinda like Iraq ) .

    No problem.

Apparently the Muslim Brotherhood is making nice with the military and are looking like the front runners in the upcoming election, which will most likely be the last election.

They are also advocating virtue police, strict sharia law, and have begun to confiscate all electronic devices.

There have also been several attacks against christians and liquor stores/cafes.

    Very cosmopolitan...

Go figure... I was afraid of this in the first place for several reasons.

1.) Conflict will continue for a long period of time
2.) The previous dictator will simply put others in power with the same ideologies
3.) The people will never be free

This is unfortunate indeed, although I have faith in the Egyptian people to STAND UP again and again.

Recent polling indicates that most egyptian people agree with the muslim brotherhood on most issues.

They might have upset the apple cart by taking away their cell phones and ipods though.

Every negative you listed has already been done by the US.

In addition, it's ignorant to say that sheer size and buildings were the only great thing about the Roman Empire. You pretty much have them to thank for our way of government, as they were the first state to really run a republic on a large scale. They made a lot of scientific advances, set up a rule of law and a more just legal code, and set up a network of trade routes that were just spectacular. Their system of roads was particularly impressive, and some of their roads are still in use today.

And as much as they may have conquered, they did allow territories to assimilate and eventually gain rights. The Romans may have been harsh, but so were the times. Looking back at history the Romans were the greatest empire before the United States, and to imply that it was anything less than great shows either a lack of understanding of history or a severe bias.

    Ecca Amecus!

I concur with this! Rome also made huge advances in medical, agriculture, and litteracy. It's way of moving water and sewage is also still in use today. They are clearly the greatest empire in history. Will the US be at that level someday? Diutis Mos Propono!

    Thanks,
