    It's the ostrich syndrome. Instead of understanding that ALL systems have vulnerabilities, they bury their heads in the sand and try to keep it quiet. If you don't see it, it isn't there. I work in healthcare IT and see this stuff all the time from bureaucrats. Since they don't understand it, they don't know how to deal with it and just ignore it.

    The hell of it is that what this team did isn't really all that sophisticated, relatively. Their execution was, but the basic technique has been around for quite some time.

    Unfortunately, this will get chalked up to being a fluke by the manufacturers and they'll convince the check-writers that it can't happen again.

    Hackers have been brought into the system more than once. If you can build it they can get around it. I used to frequent a site that had a lot of very smart computer guys that would have ran circles around these DHS guys/gals.
